Trivia / Prey (2006)

  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The PC version of Prey is not available for digital distribution and can only be played with an old physical CD. The game was briefly available on Steam, but it turns out this was only to auction off the remaining CD-Keys from unsold CDs left in inventory, and the distributor did not have the ability to generate new CD-keys and thus de-listed the game once they ran out.
  • Screwed by the Network: The fate of Prey 2, which was announced in 2011. Bethesda Softworks, who at that point owned the Prey IP, attempted a hostile takeover of Human Head Studios and cut funding on the game when they refused to comply. The game wound up being cancelled due to, according to Bethesda, "not meeting their standards of quality", which allowed Arkane's game of the same name (which had nothing to do with its namesake) to be released instead. Ironically, Human Head Studios would later reach out to Bethesda for help after shutting down in November 2019 and joined them willingly as Roundhouse Studios.
  • What Could Have Been: Development on Prey began in 1995 under the Developers of Incredible Power, the same team responsible for Apogee Software's Rise of the Triad. The game went through several changes over the years before the final version made by Human Head Studios was released. In particular, the protagonist's name was initially Talon Brave, and German industrial metal band KMFDM was hired to score the soundtrack.
