- Game Engine: The PC version uses the Build engine used in Duke Nukem 3D and several other games, but oddly enough, used an earlier version of the engine than DN3D in spite of having been released later.
- The Sega Saturn and PlayStation versions instead use the Slavedriver engine, specially developed for this game. These versions have a hub-based level system and Metroidvania-meets-First-Person Shooter gameplay long before Metroid Prime's debut, unlike the PC version. It's especially notable in that it was also used to port Duke Nukem 3D and Quake to the Saturn, with great results for a console that isn't known for competitive 3D performance.
- What Could Have Been: The PC version of the game was originally to be released as Ruins: Return of the Gods by 3D Realms.
