• California Doubling: Like so many shows, it's actually filmed mostly in Georgia.
• Cast Incest: Laura Linney and Richard Thomas, who play daughter and father here, played a couple in The Little Foxes.
• Dark Horse Victory: Few expected Jason Bateman to win an Emmy for directing for the series, especially on the year he was up against three directors for the final season of Game of Thrones.
• Dawson Casting:
  • In the first season, Charlotte is supposed to be 15 and only a year older than Jonah, but the actress was 18 and looks very clearly several years older than Jonah. This is less pronounced by season three, when Jonah has grown taller than her.
  • Ruth is supposed to be 19 at the start of the series. Julia Garner was 22 when the show was filmed.
• Fake American:
  • Peter Mullan and Janet McTeer, both Brits, play Jacob Snell and Helen Pierce respectively.
  • Boyd Langmore is played by Australian-born Christopher James Baker.
• Playing with Character Type: Jason Bateman plays the Deadpan Snarker Only Sane Man smartass we associate him with, but it's in a deadly serious situation.
• Star-Making Role: Julia Garner's star status rose considerably due to this show.
• What Could Have Been: Chloe Lukasiak from Dance Moms auditioned for the role of Charlotte.
• Write What You Know: Bill Dubuque based the show on his experience working as a deck hand on the Lake of the Ozarks in his youth.
• The Danza:
  • Nelson the hitman is played by Nelson Bonilla.
  • Melissa AKA Jade, Sam's girlfriend, is played by Melissa Saint-Amand.
