Trivia / Overlord (2018)

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: The film garnered largely positive reviews from critics and audiences, but it only made back $21 million domestically on a $38 million budget. Even accounting in the world-wide revenue, it still made barely $41 million (and the $20 million abroad is just the raw revenue, without accounting the cut taken by foreign distributors).
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: While the film was being developed, it was reported to be a fourth Cloverfield film, but J. J. Abrams denied this.
  • Fake Nationality: Wafner, presumably a German or Austrian, is played by Danish Actor Pilou Asbæk.
  • Similarly Named Works: There's a very interesting case regarding the Japanese name of the film: While the name is technically the same in Romaji (romanized Japanese), the movie shares the same name with the light novel Overlord (2012), but the spelling of the American film is different in Japan. While the light novel is spelled as "オーーロード", the American film is spelled in Japanese as "オーヴァーロード", through the pronunciation is the same. Basically, the Japanese spelling of the American film is the Xtreme Kool Letterz version of the same word. It also shares it's name with another WW2 drama, and a Heroic Fantasy strategic RPG where the player character would be the Big Bad of any other game.
  • What Could Have Been: Despite being credited as a co-cinematographer, Fabian Wagner (who shot the infamous Battle of the Bastards in Game of Thrones) was originally going to be the sole cinematographer. However, he departed the project due to personal issues.
  • Word of God: Wyatt Russell said in a behind-the-scenes interview that Corporal Ford used to work in a pharmacy and that he joined up "because that's what was expected."
