- All-Star Cast: Christopher Plummer, James Mason, David Hemmings, Susan Clark, Frank Finlay, Anthony Quayle, Donald Sutherland, Geneviève Bujold, and Sir John Gielgud.
- Dawson Casting: Christopher Plummer, age 50, as Sherlock Holmes, age 34, and James Mason, age 70, as John Watson, age 36. Mistaken Age may be a factor though.
- Fake Brit: Canadian Christopher Plummer plays the very British Sherlock Holmes. Much of the rest of the cast is Canadian as well; including Donald Sutherland, Susan Clark, Geneviève Bujold. Being a co-production between Canada and the United Kingdom, it is justified.
- What Could Have Been: Originally Peter O'Toole and Laurence Olivier were tapped for the roles of Holmes and Watson. However, the two acting legends didn't get along with each other and they concluded that they couldn't put aside their mutual dislike to work on a film together. This was the second time where O'Toole nearly played Holmes — Billy Wilder wanted him for The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. He would eventually play the part in a series of Australian made-for-TV animated films.
