Trivia / Mr. Show

Go To

  • The Cast Showoff: David sings quite a bit in the show, most notably in "Third Wheel Legend," "Superstar Machine" and the "Hey Mr. Teacher" song from the "Up Your Mother's Ass" sketch. Inverted with Bob's singing, which the cast all thought was just the right amount of flawed to be hilarious.
  • Corpsing: A few times.
    • Bob and Jill look like they're trying not to smile after the "Third Wheel Legend" song, particularly after David accidentally bumps Jill when she's frozen.
    • After David as a fashion designer says to his lover "Extra cheese if you please! I'm on my knees!" Nostradamus smiles (which was a case of Throw It In!). Tom as Abraham Lincoln almost breaks after saying "Hey, put your poo box away!"
  • The Danza: All the actors playing movie executives in "Coupon: The Movie" and everyone in the "Intervention" sketch shares the first name as the actor playing them, probably to save time in rehearsals.
  • Defictionalization:
    • tool appears in a bit part as the fictional band Puscifer. Years later, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan started using the name for his side projects.
    • Heinz has now started making their own version of mayostard, called Mayomust. In fact, they're also doing Mayochup and Mayocue. Story here.
  • Friday Night Death Slot: Inverted. The creators were actually fairly content with their Fridays at Midnight time slot. When they were moved to Mondays at Midnight for the Fourth Season, they ran promos mocking how "that way no one will be watching!"
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The second midseason special (a Clip Show) wasn't included on any of the DVDs, unlike the other two.
  • Method Acting: Parodied in a season 1 sketch where a reporter (Odenkirk) highlights an actor (Cross) who spent months studying crowds for an extra part in a crowd scene, attended medical school for two years to play a doctor with one line in a Mel Brooks film and has now had the frontal lobe of his brain removed and replaced with bubble wrap to play a lobotomized mental patient as realistically as possible.
  • Real-Life Relative: Bob Odenkirk's brother Bill wrote a lot for the show and often played bit parts in sketches or acted as Bob's double.note  Also, cast members Tom Kenny and Jill Talley are married, and frequently cast opposite each other (especially in the first two seasons).
  • Romance on the Set: David Cross and Mary Lynn Rajskub were dating during her run on the show. When they broke up, she left the show. Regular cast members Tom Kenny and Jill Talley were already married throughout the show's run.
  • Troubled Production: David revealed in Mr Show: What Happened?, during the filming of the scene on the golf course in the pilot episode, planes kept flying overhead and ruining their takes, causing Bob to start having a meltdown. David began worrying what kind of person he'd partnered with, but ultimately their collaboration was largely free of drama.
  • What Could Have Been: Sarah Silverman was asked to join the show as a writer for the fourth season. She declined, since she wanted to do a movie (she might have regretted it as it was the show's last season). Had she joined, she would have been the show's only female writer.
    • Dino Stamatopoulos wrote a skit involving a guy named NoHammers running a store called Nohammer's Hardware, but was rejected. He later retooled it for Moral Orel's third season.
