Trivia / Mario Is Missing!

Go To

  • Dummied Out: Mario inconsistently switches between a Brooklyn accent and an Italian accent throughout the game in the Deluxe version. A dig into the game files reveals that there are actually two variants of every single line Mario utters, one for each accent. It seems the developers could never settle on which accent they preferred and as a result the final game has a mixture of both.
  • Falsely Advertised Accuracy: Despite being advertised as an Edutainment Game, a few facts here are wrong.
    • It's stated that Alexander Alexeyevich Gorsky directed ballet until 1942. He died in 1924.
    • Someone in Nairobi says that female Asian elephants cannot grow tusks. In real life, they actually can.
    • Australia's capital is mistakenly stated to be Sydney instead of Canberra.
    • Prisoners in Alcatraz are portrayed as wearing stereotypical black-and-white prisoner shirts. They didn't wear these in real life.
    • A lot of places have their names spelled wrong. Caracas in Venezuela is called "Caracus", Stockholm is spelled "Stolkolm", Auckland is called "Auchland", and much more.
    • Buildings in Athens have the text "ΟΔΑΝΤΟΚΡΕNΑ" on them. This isn't a real Greek word, although it could be a misspelling of "ΟΔΟΝΤΟΚΡΕΜΑ", which means "toothpaste".
    • One of the artifacts you need to recover in New York City is King Kong, who was most definitely not real at any point.
  • Fake Nationality: Every single non-American nationality in the Deluxe version is this, since every voice actor in the game is American. In a game that already has low-grade voice acting, the results speak for themselves. That said, only Mario, Luigi, and the mayors have accents applied to them, while the townspeople are always American no matter where you are.
  • Follow the Leader: The game most obviously takes clear inspiration from Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego. In addition to it also being an edutainment game based on geography, the game also borrows the concept of trying to figure out a location based on vague clues given, it transplants the same time limit system (albeit one that does nothing except add to your score and provides no penalty for running it all the way down), and you talk to locals in the area to learn about what to do next. That said, the game does diverge a bit and can't be considered a clone — for one, each stage has you locked in one location, and the whole premise of returning landmarks is completely unique to this game, as is wandering through the town.
  • Limited Special Collector's Ultimate Edition: Besides the basic floppy disk based DOS version, there was also a deluxe CD version, which had enhanced audio and full voice acting.
  • Retcon: Nintendo has since considered Luigi's Mansion as their first game where Luigi is the hero.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Supposedly, this video shows unused voices.
    • Lemmy and Morton were meant to be in the PC version, with their voice clips remaining in the data.
