  • Creator Breakdown: "Living Dead":
"It was a gradual thing. The first song I wrote for this project, though it's not on the US version, was "Living Dead." I was pretty depressed at the time — I literally felt like I was dead inside. I wasn't enjoying my life. It's pretty sad if you're living like that but lots of people are."
    • Also occurred after finishing promotion for Froot where she was concerned she was developing a Split Personality separating her artist and private lives. She would go on hiatus and study a psychology course, which helped inspire her to return to music and write Love + Fear.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Marina has stated often that she doesn't like "Shampain".
    • She's also stated that "Girls" makes her cringe.
    • To say that the Electra Heart era was contentious is an understatement. It was what brought her music to many of her current fans' attention, but inspired a lot of debate about whether or not she was selling out, whether or not she was enjoying doing more mainstream-sounding pop.... Flash forward to nearly a decade, and Marina herself settles the score: she did not enjoy the Electra Heart concept, and felt as if it was something she had to do for greater success.
Marina: I do feel like Electra Heart was complex because of that reason. Even though it's hard to talk about, because it was so fun on one hand, and there was so much genuine creativity, but there were also moments where I did experience working with people who were so successful and popular that I didn't really have a say in things like production. I just felt incredibly pressured to make a certain type of song because I was told that I wouldn't be played on the radio here if I wasn't. The thing is, I did get played on the radio a lot and I sold like, over a million copies of "Primadonna" and "Heartbreaker," so... God, it's really hard, because I feel like those songs really helped me and gave me an amazing fanbase, which I still have today. So, I think the thing that I sacrificed was my own comfort. Even though there were good things about taking that journey, my health suffered and I felt very uncomfortable as a person throughout that campaign because I felt like I had to be somebody else in order to be liked, which was so damaging to your soul. It takes a long time to recover from that.
  • Executive Meddling: Cited as a prominent reason why the Family Jewels track "Girls" and the whole Electra Heart era were so uncomfortable for her.
  • I Am Not Spock: The primary reason she shed the "and the Diamonds" bit of her Stage Name. Particularly in the Electra Heart era, she felt that people grew more interested in a manufactured version of her as an artist rather than her true artistic sensibilities.
  • Identical Stranger: She and Charli XCX, who are friends and did a tour together, look similar enough that they have been mistaken for sisters before. (They've gone along with the joke for fun.) Even their voices can sound similar sometimes.
  • What Could Have Been: There are demos of her songs in her YouTube channel which have different lyrics and titles than the actual songs released. One example is Su-Barbie-A for "Valley of the Dolls."
