  • Executive Meddling - Buñuel was forced to make an alternative "happy ending", which fortunately(?) was not included in the final cut.
  • Follow the Leader:
    • Basically, almost every non-comedy, non-family Mexican film geared toward mature audiences has followed the steps of this film almost to a T, including having a very cynical, uncaring setting and having a Downer Ending, or at least a Bittersweet Ending. Special points if these films end with most or all the cast dead or worse. Examples include Amores Perros, Y tu mamá también, and Sexo Pudor Y Lagrimas.
    • It should be pointed out, however, this trope irked many Mexican movie directors who wanted to expand their own horizons, and in some cases, some Mexican directors, mainly the most well-known ones like Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón, have been compelled to work outside of Mexico in order to avoid being obligated to make these kind of films.
  • What Could Have Been - Buñuel originally conceived this movie as a melodramatic series about a kid who sold lottery tickets.
