Trivia / Little Big Man

Go To

  • California Doubling: While a majority of the film was shot in Montana, close to where the story takes place, the winter scenes were shot in Alberta, Canada, including the battle at Washita River.
  • Dawson Casting: Dustin Hoffman was already in his early 30s by the time he filmed as 16-year old Jack. Even more amusing is that while his character is supposed to be younger than Louise Pendrake, her actress, Faye Dunaway, was younger than Hoffman.
  • Method Acting: To obtain the hoarse voice of a 121-year-old man, Dustin Hoffman sat in his dressing room and screamed at the top of his lungs for an hour.
  • Plays Great Ethnics: Hong Kong-born Aimée Eccles, who plays Sunshine, is of Chinese descent, while Cal Bellini (Khalid Ibrahim), born of Malay descent in Singapore, played Younger Bear.
  • Playing Against Type: Faye Dunaway in a rare comedic role.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Marlon Brando owned the rights to the novel for several years, planning to star as either Jack or Old Lodge Skins. Due to the downturn in his career, Brando wasn't able to interest studios in the project, and ultimately passed it on to Arthur Penn.
    • Richard Boone, Laurence Olivier and Paul Scofield were also considered for Old Lodge Skins.
