General trivia

  • The intent of the film is the have the audience "fall in love" with the Latin American rainforest, one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. In a way, it has a subtle Green Aesop. In fact, the species of the named characters were deliberately picked from the Endangered Species List, except for Nachi (a ring-tail Koati). The World Wildlife Fund teamed up with the producers to integrate environmental messages into the film, and have their own website for people who want to know more.

Trivia tropes

  • Celebrity Voice Actor: Sofía Vergara voices Zaina (the main villain) in both the English and Latin American Spanish versions.
  • Doing It for the Art: It's extraordinarily rare in The New '20s to have a completely 2D animated film shown in American cinemas that isn't an anime. The creators believed that 2D animation was the best medium for Koati because they wanted to invoke a sense of nostalgia for The Renaissance Age of Animation. It took a lot of convincing to get the investors on their side.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Although the film has received a limited theatrical release in the United States, it only got a streaming release on Blim TV, exclusive to Latin America. The Blim TV release was November 25, 2021, just 41 days after the October 15 release date. A pirate copy of the Spanish version of the movie started circulating the internet around that time, too. The English dub also received this treatment a couple years later. No physical media release date has been announced as of December 2021.
  • Not Screened for Critics: Koati was not screened for critics. Unlike most of the other examples, no reviews have showed up anywhere, but it has gained a 67% audience approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. This might be because the movie was a limited release.
  • Produced by Cast Member: Sofía Vergara served as both executive producer and the voice of Zaina.
  • Real-Life Relative: The executive producer and voice of Zaina, Sofia Vergara, is the mother of Calli’s voice actor, Manolo.
  • Release Date Change: It was initially supposed to premiere on October 22, 2021, but for unknown reasons, it got pushed back to October 15.
  • Screwed by the Network: As mentioned above, this film did not have a pre-release screening for critics, as Televisa's theatrical division barely gave little to no promotion aside from promotional material on Facebook and Instagram, a dedicated website on its own, and a promotional spot with the aforementioned WWF, and only shown a couple trailers leading up to its release date.
  • The Wiki Rule: It's now here in all its glory.
