  • Banned in China: Due to its violence, the film was banned in China. Jet Li spoke out about this censorship.
  • Breakaway Pop Hit: Pharrell Williams' band N*E*R*D's "Lapdance" became a hit after its inclusion in the film and would later appear on their debut album In Search Of...
  • The Cast Showoff: Cyril Raffaelli knows how to perform the one-and-a-quarter backwards somersault-kick he does in the final fight scene without the aid of wires. There were at least two takes without the wire, but supposedly Cyril was moving too fast for the camera. Wires were added in for "clarity".
  • Enforced Method Acting: In the scene in which Jet Li's character Liu Jian attacks Max Ryan's character Lupo, they were supposed to film the dialog scene separately from the fight that follows. However, after the dialog, the director didn't say "cut", and so Li attacked Ryan. The take is in the final film - along with Ryan's very realistic frightened expression.
  • Playing Against Type: In a sense. Li's most famous movies were known for their heavy use of wirework for the action and fight scenes. In this movie wires are only used for three moves and only once on him, and the rest is all straight choreographed combat. Also doubles as Doing It for the Art since he also came up with the film's story that was developed into the screenplay written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen.
  • Star-Derailing Role: Following this movie, which managed to recoup its $25 million budget domestically by grossing $36.8 million in North America, and the box office failure of Monkeybone earlier that year in 2001, Bridget Fonda pretty much retired from acting to become a full-time wife and mother.
  • Written by Cast Member: Li came up with the film's story.
