  • Trope Codifier: For the modern music album. Much of Sinatra's production decisions with this album were unprecedented at the time, noted for showing an unusual dedication to artistry for the then-oft-overlooked album format and effectively modernizing it into its current form. In particular, Sinatra insisted that the album be released on a long-playing 12" record rather than as a collection of 10" discs. At the time, the LP format was reserved for classical music releases (due to it allowing lengthier compositions to be included in full with almost no breaks), and indeed some releases of In the Wee Small Hours opted to package it as a two-volume 10" set, but Sinatra's vision for the album prevailed in the end. The 12" LP version is considered to be the definitive one, and the high level of buzz surrounding its release laid the groundwork for both the long-playing vinyl album and the album as a physical product as we know it today.
