- Banned In China: The film was banned in the Irish Republic because it showed a priest having a relationship with a woman (even though, in the film, the relationship takes place before the character becomes a priest).
- Creator Backlash: Alfred Hitchcock was disappointed by the film's lukewarm reception, and later judged it to be heavy-handed and lacking his usual humour and subtlety.
- Unintentional Period Piece: A lot of the plot is dated, including the police being suspicious Ruth didn't tell her husband everything she did and being caught in the rain overnight being worth blackmailing over.
