Trivia / Hot Rod

  • Acclaimed Flop: Not a major one, but it still couldn't make back its $25 million budget. Still, it got good reviews (even Roger Ebert liked it!) and obtained a big cult following later on.
  • Fake American: Isla Fisher (Australian) and Ian McShane (British) play Americans. As do Canadian actors Mark Acheson, Alvin Sanders, Britt Irvin and Brittany Tiplady.
  • Production Posse: The Lonely Island directs and stars, and SNL fans will recognize Bill Hader and Will Arnett as well. Danny McBride and Chris Parnell also have roles.
  • Throw It In!:
    • Will Arnett ad-libbed the "BABE BABE BABE NO BABE WAIT." He was trying to crack the crew up and had no idea the entire thing was going to be in the movie.
    • The script called for Rod and Kevin to just say "Cool beans" to one another once. The two of them doing it over and over in increasingly silly voices was ad-libbed.
    • The stunt where Rod attempts to ramp over a mobile vendor truck was supposed to have the ramp collapse and Rod slam into the side of the truck. Instead, the ramp collapsed too late, sending the stuntman fully over the truck and slamming his leg into the ramp on the opposite side, shattering his femur. This is the take that makes it into the film
  • What Could Have Been: Will Ferrell was intended to be the leading man of the movie, but had to back out due to other commitments. The role was then offered to Andy Samberg. The script had to undergo rewrites once Andy was on board - apparently so many gags were tailored towards Will Ferrell's comedic sensibilities that it otherwise would have seemed like Andy was "doing a Ferrell impression".
  • Write Who You Know: Dave is based on one of Bill Hader's childhood friends. The scene where he gets a piece of metal stuck in his eye while tripping and then nonchalantly calls Rod to drive him to the hospital is lifted from a real life incident that happened with said friend.
