Trivia / Hexen

  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: In the opening cutscene of Hexen II, an image of the Chaos Serpent that D'Sparil rode on in Heretic is incorrectly used to represent D'Sparil himself, and the latter is even referred to as being a "serpent" despite the fact that he and his brothers are called the Serpent Riders.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The Portal of Praevus expansion of Hexen II had a limited run and has never had a re-release, which is likely due to being published by Activision while the base game was published by id Software. The only way to get it now is to either hunt down a legitimate copy, which is not easy because of the limited run, or download it by more shady means.
  • What Could Have Been: Mainly from Hexen II.
    • The Necromancer would have been able to make zombies from the corpses of his enemies to fight alongside him. Due to time constraints it was left out.
    • Eidolon was originally going to be green, but late in development a fan who saw an early release of the game pointed out the red hand at the end of Hexen, assuming it was Eidolon. The creators did not originally intend this to be Eidolon’s hand, but agreed it made sense for it to be him and changed his model’s coloration to red as a result.
    • The third game in the Serpent Riders Trilogy was originally titled Hecatomb, which would have featured nine Dungeons & Dragons-inspired character classes (three Good, three Neutral, and three Evil) and a large open-world environment, as opposed to having linear levels like Heretic or a hub system like Hexen. This game was cancelled after Activision's acquisition of Raven Software (leading to most of the original team leaving the company to form Human Head Studios) and John Romero's departure from id Software, and the games Hexen II and Heretic II were developed in its place. Only a few elements of Hecatomb survived in these games.
    • The Cleric's Serpent Staff has the Serpent Riders' insignia on the shaft, implying that this weapon has ties to the organization. However, the backstory behind the weapon being in the Cleric's possession wasn't explained in the final game.
