- Hey, It's That Place!: Davis's house, where Davis and Claire discuss his decision to no longer make violent movies, is actually the Ennis House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, built in the 1920s, and seen in over a dozen other movies and TV shows.
- Inspiration for the Work: Lawrence Kasdan was about to walk across a busy street one day when a woman pulled him back just before a bus nearly ran him over. As Kasdan recalled, he was so stunned he couldn't even speak to the woman, and he always regretted not going up to her afterwards to thank her and talk with her. That feeling made Kasdan decide to do this movie.
- Playing with Character Type: Steve Martin. While Martin's character Davis still provides most of the comedy in an otherwise serious dramatic film, overall this is a much more subdued role than what audiences of the time were used to seeing from Martin.
- Real-Life Relative:
- Randle Mell, the then-husband of Mary McDonnell, plays The Alley Baron.
- Meg Kasdan, Lawrence Kasdan's wife, co-wrote the movie and also served as associate producer.
- Technology Marches On: The Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD) (or teletypewriter (TTY)) that Simon uses to communicate with his deaf daughter who attends college in Washington, D.C. While such devices do still exist, someone today would be much more likely to use a text message or email.
- Those Two Actors: This is the second time Lawrence Kasdan has directed both Kevin Kline and Danny Glover in a film together. The first time was 1985's Silverado. Actor Todd Allen also plays a minor role in both films.
