- Casting Gag: Avril Bradley is a girl with blonde Boyish Short Hair. Erica Mendez also plays Sailor Uranus in the Viz-redub of Sailor Moon, who like Avril, has Boyish Short Hair, and her hair is blonde.
- Dueling Works: Came out the same year as the anime adaptation of The Mystic Archives of Dantalian from Studio Gainax. Both shows are about Gothic Lolitas solving mysteries in a Post-World War Europe.
- Follow the Leader: The whole premise of a bright-haired, vaguely supernatural detective girl and her dark, male assistant and love interest has been imitated by several other light novel series over the years, most famously Aria the Scarlet Ammo, In/Spectre and The Detective is Already Dead.
- No Export for You: This applied for six years after the anime aired on 2011, but subverted on 2017 when Funimation rescued the series. To fans' surprise, it was also given a dub.

in the Tôhoku region of Japan. - Write Who You Know: Author Kazuki Sakuraba got inspired to become a writer back in middle school, when she met a girl who spent all her time reading in the library with the same aspiration. Soon after, Sakuraba herself was spending all her own time there, even skipping class in order to read. In a sense, Kazuya and Victorique represent respectively Sakuraba before and after meeting her friend.
