Trivia / Fly Away Home

Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background: Like Amy, Anna Paquin is a New Zealander born in Canada.
  • California Doubling: Mostly averted; even the short scenes taking place in New Zealand and the (U.S.) Niagara Falls military base were shot on location. North Carolina is used to double for South Carolina, however.
    • In a straight example, the Baltimore scene was shot in Toronto. Savvy viewers have noted that the buildings in the scene are taller than one would actually find in Baltimore.
  • Fake Nationality: American actors Jeff Daniels, Dana Delany, and Terry Kinney as Canadians.
  • Similarly Named Works: The film is unrelated to the 1991 Eve Bunting children's book of the same name about a homeless family living in an airport.
  • Very Loosely Based on a True Story: Incredibly loosely, the story is based on the actions of real Canadian sculptor and ultralight aircraft builder and pilot Bill Lishman. Lishman did guide geese on migration with an aircraft in 1993 but was working with professional conservationists, and was working alongside his sons as Lishman's daughter was only 7 at this point and the youngest child of three. Lishman's wife was very much alive at the time and actually outlived him in the end (he sadly died in 2017 from leukaemia). Lishman worked with the film makers to train the geese used in the movie and also was Jeff Daniels body double for aerial shots of the flying scenes.
  • What Could Have Been: Daryl Hannah was considered for the role of Susan.
  • Working Title: Initially, the film was titled Flying Wild. VHS copies of Jumanji include a trailer that uses the original title.
