    • One of the most prominent inspirations for Flipped’s themes came from Wendelin Van Draanen’s experiences as a high school teacher watching students have crushes for completely superficial reasons. She admitted that she was in the same boat when she was that age but it took a very long time for her to learn to “look past the surface” and that she wishes she had a book like Flipped to help her see things clearly

    • Uncle David’s accident at birth was inspired by two separate accounts in Wendelin Van Draanen’s life. Her second child was born with the umbilical cord around his neck and survived with no side effects, the same could not be said for her husbands coworkers son who was left wheelchair bound and severely handicapped under similar circumstances.
