Trivia / Down the Rabbit Hole

Go To

  • Approval of God:
    • In Fredrik's first Mistakes video, he stated that _9MOTHER9HORSE9EYES9 thanked him for making the episode of Down the Rabbit Hole covering The Interface Series, and that he got to have a talk with GabbiKat (a redditor who helped collect the scattered posts that the series was made out of) in one of the threads.
    • The day after the WingsOfRedemption video, Jordie invited Fredrik to an interview on his stream where he said he enjoyed the video and was pleased on how Fredrik tried to give a researched and unbiased depiction of him rather than just bash him.
  • Colbert Bump: Although somewhat well-known prior, Fred's video on Henry Darger did help boost the latter's recognition among the internet-going public.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: He has two videos compiling the mistakes in his videos.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • In the first above-linked Mistakes video, Fredrik singles out his episode on Vaporwave for being an egregious example of Cowboy BeBop at His Computer, his rushed productionnote , and using an inaccurate picture on Ramona Xavier.
    • Similarly, Fredrik isn't too proud of his internet celebrities videos like the Spoony, CWC and DarksydePhil episodes as he felt he left too much important info for the sake of brevity. He admitted this in his WingsOfRedemption Q&A that ever since he realized his audience would be comfortable with longer videos lasting two hours, he could still add more information he felt useful.
    • Fredrik also mentions his dissatisfaction with the GameLife episode in that video's comments. He explained that the crossover with Guru Larry was a "failure" (although he did enjoy working with him), and went on to say that this would be the last time that Down the Rabbit Hole had a crossover episode.
    • In his "Mistakes 2" video, he commented that he disliked his livestreams of both Sonichu and Empress Theresa. The primary reason was that it didn't make much sense to have it be on his main channel since it distracted from the main content. He ended up making another channel for his livestreams.
    • In his Purr Cat Cafe Q&A video, Fredrik admitted that he doesn't like the name Down the Rabbit Hole, confessing it was a terrible name for the web series but that it's too late now to change it.
  • Creator Breakdown: At a comparatively early point in the writing of EVE Online, Fredrik realized he had made a glaring research error, and was forced to radically rewrite over half the completed script in time to have a work-in-progress for a convention. This left him embarrassed with himself and caused him to second-guess his writing, to the point where he struggled to concentrate. The impact this had on the production time only made the matter progressively worse.
  • He Also Did:
  • In Memoriam: The Battle of May Island ends with a memorial featuring the names of all victims of the incident.
    • More personally, Deep Blue was dedicated to the memory of somebody Knudsen only referred to as "Spikey."
I will live a beautiful life for you.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: Fredrik got an illegitimate one on his Rajneeshpuram video from Osho International by the latter copyrighting news footage that they don't even own because they thought it would paint them in a negative light. This forced him to upload an edited version on YouTube and an uncut version elsewhere. In April 2020, it got another copyright claim by Osho International, and is only available through other channels which have it archived.
  • Schedule Slip: Since the Time Cube episode, the show has began suffering from this, as the Rajneeshpuram episode came a full 2 months after the Time Cube episode, the Noah Antwiler (Spoony) video came another full 2 months after the Rajneeshpuram episode, and the Final Fantasy House video came another full 2 months after the Noah Antwiler (Spoony) video. Delays would only increase since then, to the point where only three videos were produced in 2019, two in 2020, one in 2021, and none in 2022. Factors include the sheer depth of the show's research, the increasing intricacy of his productions, his choice of subjects (more than a few attempts at a Breather Episode have spiraled into feature-length productions) and work habits Fred described as "a four-year manic episode."
  • Troubled Production: The Battle of May Island took longer to produce than Deep Blue, despite being less than half as long. Years of poor scheduling practices came to a head, when Knudsen tried forcing himself to work through an emotional upheaval (which he confirmed to be the loss of "Spikey") instead of giving himself a moment to properly deal. As a result, much of the production time was spent recuperating from a serious case of burnout.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The very first episode was made as, of all things, a job application. The company never answered back, but it gained traction on YouTube, inspiring him to make it a series.
    • Fred was going to do a collaboration episode on Billy Mitchell after Rajneeshpuram but the person he was going to collaborate with was named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by Billy during the supposed production.
    • Fred was going to do the Hurdy Gurdy topic as a special episode at a Too Many Games convention panel before he truncated doing only the Furry Fandoms topic at said convention. Additionally, Fred was also going to do the Furry Fandoms topic at the convention but he didn't have enough time at the panel.
      • Since then, he's decided on turning the topics into videos in their own right, with the Furries video being made first, and the Hurdy Gurdy video coming out after the emotionally taxing TempleOS video.
    • The Final Fantasy House episode was going to be longer and would also show how Jen's bonding behavior carried over to the Hannibal fandom. The reason Fred did not cover it was due to the video itself being long enough already and the video's main focus was on the Final Fantasy House rather than Jen herself. That said, Fred has expressed interest in doing a separate episode about Jen herself (and TattleCrime.org) in the comments to Final Fantasy House.
    • The Groverhaus, discussed in episode 3 of The Warrens, was intended as a Down The Rabbit Hole topic, but too much of the information was lost to make a proper episode.
    • In the Gamelife Q&A video, Fred noted that one of the people he reached out to for a crossover was Caddicarus, but ultimately Fred couldn't find a way to fit him into the channel. They eventually decided to collaborate on a Twitch stream about the infamous Gaming in the Clinton Years which Caddy had covered on his channel; unfortunately the stream was plagued with technical difficulties and had to be cut short. Caddy has expressed interest in trying the stream again, but time will tell whether that particular collaboration will ever come to fruition.
    • The Battle of May Island was intended as a Breather Episode, but Fredrik gradually discovered more to the story, to the point where it became extremely convoluted and much darker than Deep Blue before it.
