• Executive Meddling: Morgan was originally a woman, with Susan James cast in the role. However, she was replaced by Tony Caunter when The BBC's Head of Drama Serials made an unusual intervention and decided the role was inappropriate for a woman to perform. Jameson was nevertheless paid in full. Director Michael E. Briant though the decision was "unenlightened and sexist".
• What Could Have Been: Malcolm Hulke originally envisioned the IMC robot as humanoid in shape.
• Working Title: Colony.
• Writer Revolt: Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks greatly disliked the "exiled to Earth" Retool of the show, but they were left with it by the previous production team. This was the first time they deliberately broke the new format by taking the Doctor off-world, and they would do so more and more until eventually the Doctor's freedom to roam time and space was fully restored at the start of the tenth season.
