• Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things: Lackey famously wrote a scathing essay / open letter titled "The Last Straw" (more here) in which she explained in pointed detail why she stopped writing Di Tregarde books (they didn't sell) and the staggering range of fan idiocy and harassment she and her husband received over the series and the decision not to continue it, from conspiracy theories that the series was being "suppressed" by the publisher or some fundamentalist group to people professing to honestly believe that the Guardians were real, that Lackey was one of them, and that they could be as well if Lackey were not somehow responsible for helping to suppress their magical potential. The threats she received, and at least one actual incident at a convention, caused Lackey and Dixon to stop appearing at cons for a while, and to carefully limit their appearances once they did start making them again.
