Dawson Casting: Many of the actors are in their late 20s or early 30s playing college students.
Meta Casting: Tessa Thompson and Tyler James Williams, who played Sam and Lionel respectively in the movie, get recasted in the second season of the show as Rikki Carter and Carson Rhode, two conservative and liberal media personalities respectively.
The Other Darrin: Most of the actors from the film didn't return for the TV adaptation. Most notable is Tessa Thompson, who couldn't reprise her role because she was busy filming Thor: Ragnarok. Logan Browning ended up replacing her in the role of Sam, though Thompson eventually did appear in the second season playing a side character (her views are, ironically, pretty much Sam's opposite).
Streisand Effect: Unsurprisingly, the TV show's title angered a lot of people online leading them to call for the boycotting of Netflix for even agreeing to green-light a series with a name supposedly racist to white people and categorizing them as monsters. Creator Justin Simien applauded this kind of backlash because it only brought the series more fame and publicity.
