The film

  • Actor-Shared Background: Like Sam, Tessa Thompson has mixed race heritage.
  • Role Reprise: Brandon P. Bell, Marque Richardson, Ashley Blaine Featherson and Nia Jervier are some of the only actors from the film to reprise their roles in the series.

The TV series

  • Actor-Shared Background: Logan Browning, who plays Sam, is also of mixed race heritage.
  • Dawson Casting: Many of the actors are in their late 20s or early 30s playing college students.
  • Descended Creator: Jerry Skyler is played by series creator Justin Simien.
  • Meta Casting: Tessa Thompson and Tyler James Williams, who played Sam and Lionel respectively in the movie, get recast in the second season of the show as Rikki Carter and Carson Rhode, two conservative and liberal media personalities respectively.
  • The Other Darrin: Most of the actors from the film didn't return for the TV adaptation. Most notable is Tessa Thompson, who couldn't reprise her role because she was busy filming Thor: Ragnarok. Logan Browning ended up replacing her in the role of Sam, though Thompson eventually did appear in the second season playing a side character (her views are, ironically, pretty much Sam's opposite).
  • Role Reprise: While some characters were recast, some did return including Brandon P. Bell (Troy), Marque Richardson (Reggie) and Ashley Blaine Featherson (Joelle). Even some of the actors who played smaller parts in the film returned to play those parts, albeit with a bit more characterization, in the series.
  • Streisand Effect: Unsurprisingly, the TV show's title angered a lot of people online, leading them to call for the boycotting of Netflix for even agreeing to green-light a series with a name supposedly racist to white people and categorizing them as monsters. Creator Justin Simien applauded this kind of backlash because it only brought the series more fame and publicity.
