  • Big Name Fan: Ava DuVernay and Beyoncé are both huge fans, and partially responsible for reviving interest in the film.
  • Vindicated by History: While it made something of an impact when first released in 1991 (notably as the first widely distributed feature-length film to be directed by an African-American woman), the film fell off the map for the next two decades or so. Beyonce's 2016 visual album Lemonade (2016) (which took scenic and thematic cues from the film), coupled with a restoration and re-release in the same year, brought the film back into the spotlight and got it the attention it deserved.
