  • Creator Breakdown: Their 2004 album Songs of the Unforgiven is a very bleak, slow acoustic record about death, with no obvious singles. This album caused some of Brad Roberts' friends and band members to worry about the state of his health. He had to reassure them that the somber style was intentional.
  • Doing It for the Art: Part of the reason that the Dummies are a one-hit wonder who've been whittled down to Brad Roberts and the occasional backup musician is that Roberts hated the workmanlike responsibilities of being a professional musician. Eventually, he decided it was better to sacrifice the benefits of a major label deal and mainstream success to be able to just play music for fun.

  • Life Imitates Art: One year after the band released "Superman's Song," Superman died in the comics.
  • Money, Dear Boy: Contrast with the above, the original lineup of the band eventually reunited and began touring regularly because Roberts was deeply in debt.
  • One-Hit Wonder: "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" was their only top 40 hit on the Hot 100, but they had other hits in Canada and the UK, along with a few hits on rock stations. However, they are only remembered by the general public for "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm".
