Trivia / Coming 2 America

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Once again, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall.
  • B-Team Sequel: John Landis had no involvement with the film whatseover.
  • Cast the Runner-Up: Eddie Murphy wanted Tracy Morgan to play Lavelle, but Arsenio Hall pointed out that it would come across as implausible due to Murphy only being seven years older than Morgan. Murphy still wanted him in the movie so they cast him as Lavelle's uncle.
  • The Character Died with Him: Madge Sinclair, who played Queen Aoleon, passed away in 1995. Instead of recasting the role, it's mentioned that the queen passed away before the events of the film. However, her legacy has a crucial impact on the third act of the story. When Cleo asks Akeem how does think his mother would advise him on handling his dilemma with Lavelle if she were still living, Akeem remembers her advice about going after Lisa. Therefore, he goes after the Junsons by traveling to Queens and reconciling with them.
  • In Memoriam: The film is dedicated to Ryan J Nelson.
  • Real-Life Relative: Omma, Akeem and Lisa's second daughter, is portrayed by Eddie Murphy's real-life daughter Bella.
  • Release Date Change: The film was originally intended to be released in theaters on August 7, 2020, but was pushed back to December 18, 2020. It was pushed back again following the COVID-19 Pandemic, finally releasing on Amazon Prime on March 4, 2021.
  • Role Reprise: A lot of the original movie's cast returns for the sequel.
    • Eddie Murphy as Akeem, Clarence and Saul from the barbershop, and Randy Watson (of Sexual Chocolate fame).
    • Arsenio Hall as Semmi, Morris the barber, and Reverend Brown.
    • James Earl Jones as King Jaffe Joffer.
    • Shari Headley as Lisa McDowell.
    • John Amos as Cleo McDowell.
    • Paul Bates as Oha.
    • Vanessa Bell Calloway as Imani Izzi.
    • Louie Anderson as Maurice.
    • Garcelle Beauvais as Grace.
    • Clint Smith as Sweets the barber.
    • Janette & Vanessa Colon as Fresh Peaches and Sugar Cube
    • In the Japanese dub, Kōichi Yamadera reprise the role as Akeem and all characters played by Eddie Murphy from the NTV dub. It should be noted he is the only voice actor from that dub reprising their roles in this film.
    • In the French dub, only Maïk Darah reprises her role as Lisa.
    • In the Portuguese dub, Helio Ribeiro (all of Arsenio Hall's characters), Lina Rossana (Lisa) and Marco Ribeiro (Sweets) reprise their roles.
  • Sequel Gap: Released a whopping thirty-three years after the first Coming to America. The story is set thirty years later, however.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Samuel L. Jackson was supposed to show up again to rob McDowell's, but the scene was scrapped and never filmed due to scheduling difficulties. He does still show up in stock footage from the first film.
    • Likewise Eriq La Salle had a role penned in for his character from the original, Darryl Jenks, but he was too tied down to the schedules of his own projects to appear. Had he done so, his character's relationship with Cleo's other daughter Patrice (hinted at in the original) would have been shown.
    • Ryan Coogler suggested to Eddie Murphy that they make a sequel focusing on Akeem's own son trying to find a wife with Michael B. Jordan playing the part. Murphy didn't like this idea because it was too similar to the first film and felt it would take the focus away from the original characters.
