Trivia / Carry On Girls

Go To

  • Actor-Inspired Element: During a rehearsal of Mayor Bumble's Bathtub Scene, there was some discussion on how to make the scene (and the Teeny Weenie innuendo) less blunt, causing an embarrassed Kenneth Connor to shout for more bubbles!
  • Acting for Two: Phillip Webb plays a council member and a man on the Tube.
  • Billing Displacement: Peter Butterworth, Patsy Rowlands, and Jack Douglas were all added to the list of stars in the film's trailer and on the original VHS release. While this makes sense seeing as the three played rather large roles, Joan Hickson and David Lodge being including in the trailer doesn't as the two of them are barely in the film.
  • Box Office Bomb: The film was a relative failure at the box office. It was this failure that led to a reduction in the number of Carry On films from two films a year (for most years of the series up to and including 1972) to one film a year. The film's failure also led to the cancellation of the Carry On Christmas TV specials.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • Finland: Let's Go, Girls.
    • Germany: Mismatch in English.
    • Hungary: Keep Going, Girls!.
    • Poland: Full Speed Ahead: Girls to Work.
    • Portugal: Simply... 'Girls'.
    • Sweden: Come on Girls/Lets Take the Miss.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer:
    • The description on the back of the VHS has two errors:
      • Hope and Dawn are described as Hell's Angels; However, Hope isn't part of any gang and Dawn doesn't even ride a motorcycle.
      • There is a character mentioned called "Major Bumble", seemingly mixing together Peter Butterworth's character (the Admiral) and Kenneth Connor's character (Mayor Bumble).
    • The book The Carry On Films by Steven Gerrard at one point incorrectly claims that Connie is Sid's fiancée rather than his girlfriend.
  • Creator Backlash: Robert Ross reveals on the DVD Commentary that Jimmy Logan later admitted he thought Cecil Gaybody was the most embarrassing role he had ever played and was really ashamed of it.
  • The Danza: Sid James as Sid Fiddler.
  • Deleted Scene:
    • Sid and Mrs. Prodworthy arguing over the state of Fircombe's beaches:
Mrs. Prodworthy: No one can deny that we have one of the most impressive beaches on the coast!
Sid: It's impressive, alright. There's more tar on it than we have on the flippin' roads!
    • Sid talking about having a "quick snog under the bandstand" was filmed later because the BBFC didn't approve of the original line where he mentions having a "quick knee-trembler under the pier" instead.
    • Mayor Bumble shutting down Alderman Pratt's bowls competition idea due to the fact that Fircombe has no greens.
    • Mrs. Prodworthy correcting Sid on the pronunciation of "Fircombe", followed by Sid sarcastically telling her she'd look good in a bikini.
    • Sid getting offended at comparing the beauty queens to cattle because he's never been turned on by cows in his life, followed by Alderman Pratt suggesting laying greens for the bowls competition.
    • The BBFC had saw a saucy line of dialogue cut - "You have been in everything else".
    • Hope helping transform Peter into Patricia lost a rather near the knuckle exchange - Hope asking "Anything else you want off?", followed by Peter's "I don't think that will be necessary".
    • Peter (in disguise as Patricia Potter) becoming "Miss Littlehampton".
    • The scene where Mrs. Prodworthy explains Operation Spoilsport lost a line from Rosemary, as evidenced by some choppy editing.
    • There were more scenes of Mrs. Prodworthy and the feminists on the pier that were cut down.
  • DVD Commentary: With Carry On historian Robert Ross talking to June Whitfield (Councillor Augusta Prodworthy), Jack Douglas (William) and Patsy Rowlands (Mildred Bumble).
  • Edited for Syndication: The Cat Fight between Hope and Dawn is cut down when aired on ITV3.
  • Fake Brit: The South African-born Sid James plays the British Sid Fiddler.
  • Harpo Does Something Funny: While William's twitching was scripted, Jack Douglas reveals on the DVD Commentary that he was given free rein to do whatever he wanted with it and go as far as possible.
  • Hey, It's That Place!: The cast returned to Brighton for the fictional seaside town of Fircombe. The first time was Carry On at Your Convenience for the memorable drunken day trip with the staff at the toilet factory.
  • Hide Your Pregnancy: Margaret Nolan was pregnant during filming but didn't tell anyone for fear of being fired.
  • Inspiration for the Work: The concept of feminists sabotaging a beauty concept came from when an event during Miss World in 1970, where Bob Hope had flour and tomatoes thrown at him by women protesting their rights.
  • Looping Lines: When one of Connie's hotel regulars checks out, he looks back at the beauty queens and groans. This was dubbed over in post-production, as the actor's mouth does not move.
  • Orphaned Reference: While Fircombe is pronounced by everyone as "Firk 'em", Mrs. Prodworthy noticeably says "Fircoom" every time. This was explained in an early Deleted Scene where Mrs. Prodworthy reveals that her pronunciation is the correct one, whereas Sid and all the visitors say the other due to the innuendo involved.
  • Referenced by...: Episode 4 of Life on Mars (2006) has Sam and Annie choose between watching this film or Mean Streets during their date.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: Gerald Thomas wanted Robin Askwith to do more Carry On films after this one but felt that by starring in the Confessions of a... Series (the Carry On's main competitor in The '70s) he had betrayed the series.
  • Romance on the Set: Sid James and Barbara Windsor had an affair during filming.
  • Stunt Double:
    • Joan Sims' close friend Norah Holland fills in for her when Connie crashes into the gong.
    • Nick Hobbs fills in for Barbara Windsor during Hope and Sid's escape from the pier via motorcycle.
  • Uncredited Role:
    • Michael Nightingale as the city gent on the Tube.
    • Hugh Futcher as the citizen who leads the angry crowd to get Sid after the Miss Fircombe Contest goes south.
    • We don't find out who played Cyril, the cameraman on Women's Things.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In early drafts of the script, the action was set in the equally fictional seaside town of Bungcope (pronounced "bunk up"), Mayor Bumble was named Mayor Firkin, and it closed with a car chase and wedding between Sid Fiddler and Hope Springs.
    • Paula Perkins' surname was originally Prentiss, and she was originally supposed to be a teacher of archaeology.
    • The role of Cecil Gaybody was written for Charles Hawtrey, who had been dropped from the series following a dispute over top billing in Carry On Stuffing. It was then offered to Kenneth Williams, who turned it down because of stage commitments to My Fat Friend, even after the role was cut down to allow him energy for the play. Williams was also considered for the role of Mayor Bumble.
    • The role of the Police Inspector was offered to Bill Maynard but he withdrew to do a better-paying TV job and the role went to David Lodge.
    • Renée Houston was cast as Mrs. Dukes, but ill health caused her contract to be cancelled, so Joan Hickson took over her role.
    • Julian Holloway recalled in 2018 that he had been asked to return for either this film or Carry On Abroad (he couldn't remember which one) but turned it down.
    • The photographer was meant to be a wordless Living Prop, but after Robin Askwith was cast at the insistence of Sid James (they had starred together in the film version of Bless This House), it was built up into the character of Larry Prodworthy.
    • When Hope asks Peter if he would prefer "a short or a long one" (talking about wigs) Peter was supposed to respond with "I should ask you that", but it was cut from the script.
  • Working Title: Carry On Beauty Queens.
