Trivia / Carry On Behind

Go To

  • Actor-Inspired Element: Larry Dann recalls on the DVD Commentary that right before filming the scene where Bob and Clive get frisky with Sylvia and Vera, Liz Fraser told him to "grab hold of me tits", much to his amusement as he had never met her before.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • Denmark: The Crazy Campers.
    • Germany: Everything Backfires/The Totally Crazy Mummy Fright.
    • Hungary: Carry On Digging.
    • Iran: Give me the Idea.
    • Italy: Camping Cheerleader.
    • Norway: Camping with a Trailer/Carry On on the Go.
    • Poland: Full Speed Ahead: Roman Camping.
    • Portugal: With Way Goes... at Party.
    • Sweden: Check Now we Take the Tanning!!!/Now we Take the Romans.
    • Turkey: A Tasting of Honey.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Kenneth Williams wrote in his diary:
Read the Carry On Behind script. It is the worst I've ever read. The part for me, Roland Crump, is small, it is unfunny, and is mostly concerned with heavily contrived slapstick. Don't know why on earth they offer it to me.
    • Liz Fraser wouldn't count Behind as one of the Carry On films she had been in because she didn't like how small her role was.
  • Deleted Scene:
    • Professor Crump's lecture in the first scene was cut down as evidenced by stills on the DVD and some choppy edits.
    • Major Leep and Barnes crossing paths while looking for Daphne's mynah bird and Ollie respectively.
    • Major Leep starting a fight with the plasterer over some supposedly crooked plaster slabs.
    • Larry Dann recalled on the DVD Commentary that there were more digging scenes filmed that ended up being cut.
    • In a 2023 interview, Jenny Cox revealed that the stripper, Veronica, was supposed to have more of a romantic storyline with Kenneth Connor that was cut, including a scene near the end of the film where Veronica and Major Leep go on a date in his caravan. While the aforementioned scene was filmed, several others weren't due to schedule issues caused by an unnamed actress (but presumed to be Adrienne Posta) showing up late and taking extra time in wardrobe.
  • Descended Creator: Gerald Thomas provided the voice for Daphne's mynah bird. This had been the second time he'd done a voice recording for a Carry On since Carry On Screaming!.
  • DVD Commentary: With Carry On historian Robert Ross talking to writer Dave Freeman, Jack Douglas (Ernie Bragg), Patsy Rowlands (Linda Upmore) and Larry Dann (Clive).
  • Edited for Syndication:
    • Professor Crump's lecture loses the Cue Card Pause segment when aired on TV.
    • A scene discussing underwear was cut out from a 2021 airing on ITV3.
    • When aired over the Easter holidays in 2023, all the scenes where Professors Vooshka and Crump mistake a bottle of tomato sauce for blood and the brief scene of Professor Vooshka showing some skin at the end were cut.
  • Enforced Method Acting: When Ernie falls into the water-filled hole, Jack Douglas wasn't told where the hole would be, so the fall was genuine.
  • Fake Russian: The German Elke Sommer as Professor Anna Vooshka.
  • Hostility on the Set:
    • Kenneth Williams couldn't stand Elke Sommer due to her bad breath and lack of experience filming comedies (going as far as to refuse to look at her at times), was furious with George Layton after he accidentally sliced his toe and didn't want to have Jenny Cox sit on his knee during the strip tease scene.
    • Liz Fraser had a small falling-out with Patricia Franklin. During filming, they had appeared in different episodes of the same series, and Franklin's episode was getting more publicity than Fraser's, which made Fraser rather cross.
    • Joan Sims was rather fed up by the end of filming due to the constant schedule hold-ups and poor weather on set and refused to attend the wrap party. After Jenny Cox told everyone that she had gone home, Kenneth Connor drove after her to bring her back.
  • Looping Lines: Ernie's cries of "Phwaaay!" during Veronica's striptease were clearly dubbed over later as Jack Douglas' mouth does not move.
  • On-Set Injury:
    • George Layton accidentally sliced Kenneth Williams' toe with a scalpel while filming the hospital scene.
    • Sherrie Hewson and Carol Hawkins nearly froze while filming their bikini scenes. The scenes were filmed in snowy weather, causing their skin to turn so blue that the makeup department had to paint their skin yellow to make it look normal!
  • Pop Culture Urban Legends: Some fans believe a story that allegedly Sid James filmed a cameo before he was due to tour in The Mating Game. No such scene has ever been alluded to by cast or crew.
  • Real-Life Relative: Kenneth Connor's (Major Leep) son Jeremy played the student with an ice cream at the beginning of the film.
  • Recycled Script: The film is a rehash of Carry On Camping set in a caravan park as opposed to a campsite.
  • Throw It In!: Barnes' line about Ollie's wet nose when he sniffs him was ad-libbed by Peter Butterworth.
  • Uncredited Role:
  • Underage Casting: Although Joan Sims plays Patsy Rowlands' mother in this film, Sims was only eight months older than Rowlands.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Talbot Rothwell had been planning a World War I Carry On while Carry On Dick was in pre-production, but had to retire due to exhaustion.
    • Roland Crump's surname was originally Plumcott.
    • Sid James and Barbara Windsor were set to play Fred Ramsden and Norma Baxter, but were out of the British Isles at the time of filming. Their roles were taken over by Windsor Davies (at the suggestion of Jack Douglas) and Adrienne Posta.
    • Hattie Jacques was hoped to return, but unfortunately Carry On Dick was her final Carry On due to her health.
    • Chris Gannon was booked to play the role of the barman. However, he was offered a better paid job that clashed with the shooting schedule, so his agent arranged for Kenneth Waller to take over the part.
    • The BBFC fought to have the shots of Veronica the stripper's bare breasts cut from the opening scene and a scene with Linda being viewed through a caravan window due to her "dangling breasts", but they were left in as a gift from John Trevelyan, who was finally standing down from the BBFC after overseeing the edits in the Carry On... Series for most of its history.
  • Working Title: Love On Wheels, Carry On Carrying On, Carry On Caravan, Carry On In a Caravan and Carry On Caravanning.
  • Write Who You Know: Daphne's mynah bird was inspired by writer Dave Freeman's own mynah bird.
