Trivia associated with this episode:

  • The Character Died with Him: Never explicitly stated, but strongly implied, as Ben — shortly after Joe leaves for his time alone — gently caresses a photograph on the dresser of Joe's room. A camera zoom-in reveals that the photo was Hoss, and that he was no longer walking among them.
  • What Might Have Been:
    • The episode was originally written for Dan Blocker, where it would be Hoss abandoning bachelorhood, meeting Alice, the two marrying, Hoss learning he's going to be a father ... and then have it all come crashing down when Alice is brutally killed by a psychopath trying to collect on a gambling debt owed him by her brother, with Hoss then grieving, becoming an aimless drifter trying to get over his grief and then, after coming across the music box by chance, learning the truth behind his wife's death, before Hoss recruits Joe to help seek revenge. Blocker, sadly, died before the script was completed, so Michael Landon decided to rewrite the script to have Joe become the tragic bridegroom.
    • The original script had Mr. Hanley also perishing during his struggle with Damion, presumably the two being caught in a current and being unable to escape. One version of the story has it that the river conditions made it unsafe to film the scene as originally envisioned, but whatever the case, Hanley emerges unscathed, holding Damion's limp body.
    • In the weeks following Dan Blocker's death, there was speculation that Pernell Roberts (who played eldest Cartwright son Adam) would be coaxed back and that the character would make his return in this episode. In the end, that didn't come to pass, but The Bus Came Back brought back David Canary as ranch hand Candy Canaday.
