Trivia / Assassination Nation

  • Actor-Inspired Element: The young actresses were all encouraged to contribute to the script and provide input for what the characters might say or do.
  • Box Office Bomb: Budget: $7,000,000. Box office: $2,005,142 (domestic), $847,617 (international). While its international returns can be attributed to it only being released in five countries outside of America, it made half of its all-time domestic gross in its opening weekend. The money it did make ($1,050,021) was just 25% of its expected performance that weekend, which was enough for W magazine to call it the worst box office opening of the year. Both a statement from the chief of the film's distributor Neon after the fact and a pre-release statement from an analyst positioned the film as a Cult Classic in the making.
  • Dawson Casting: While a large amount of actual teenage actors played the characters, Suki Waterhouse and Hari Nef were both twenty.
  • Inspiration for the Work: Sam Levinson conceived and began writing the film's story shortly before the birth of his first child, citing his fear for the social direction of the world he was bringing his child into as inspiration.
"...I think I was responding to a very specific terror: the idea that I was bringing a kid into a world – specifically a country – that was outwardly celebrating aggression and violence and vitriol and mob mentality."
  • Fake American: Bill Skarsgård (Swedish) as Mark.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: Hari Nef is trans, like her character Bex.
