Trivia / A Man Called Horse

Go To

  • California Doubling: Sioux territory was in modern-day Minnesota and Wisconsin, but the film was shot exclusively in the Mexican states of Durango and Sonora.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Director Elliot Silverstein told Richard Harris at the onset of production that they planned to shoot Harris in the nude for a scene in the film, with total front and rear views. In order to lose some weight, Harris gave up drinking for the duration of the shoot, only to have the filmed scene cut from the final version of the film.
  • Fake Nationality: Most of the Sioux characters are played by non-Indigenous actors; Judith Anderson (Australian), Jean Gascon (French-Canadian), Manu Tupou (Fijian), Corinna Tsopei (Greek), Manuel Padilla Jr. (Mexican-American), and Iron Eyes Cody (Sicilian-American).
  • Hostility on the Set: Richard Harris and Elliott Silverstein clashed during filming, and when Howard and Harris reunited on Man in the Wilderness, producer Sandy Howard hired Richard Sarafian.
  • What Could Have Been: Many actors, including Robert Redford, turned down the lead role before Richard Harris was cast.
