Crossover

  • Amazing Fantasy (My Hero Academia & Spider-Man): The Prowler makes it clear that she does not like Mysterio and is only working for him because she's ordered to. She loudly disparages him in his safe house after he saved her from All Might, gives him the middle finger when he demands to know why she couldn't kill Peter, and mocks his insistence on the phrase "squash the bug". Mysterio in turn calls Prowler a bitch behind her back and would like nothing more than to put her in her place, but refrains from doing so to maintain his business relationship with her boss, All For One.
  • BlazBlue Alternative: Remnant (BlazBlue & RWBY): Ironwood and Rachel are both members of Ozpin's inner circle, but they're shown to constantly argue and bicker with each other. Ironwood hates Rachel for her constant condescension and derision of him, while Rachel hates Ironwood for his recklessness and bullheadedness. Whenever they're in the same room, Ozpin has to work as a mediator to keep the two from coming to blows.
  • The Blue Blur of Termina (The Legend of Zelda & Sonic the Hedgehog; author Died During Production): Following their encounter in the jungle, Sonic and Tatl are forced to team up when the Skull Kid incapacitates and leaves behind Tatl in the Subterranean Forest. Despite having a mutual goal in finding the Skull Kid, Sonic and Tatl pretty much hate each other, especially the latter.
  • Code Prime (Code Geass & Transformers): The key difference between the Autobots/Black Knights and Britannia/Decepticons, which is spelled out in United We Stand and Knights and Miracle Workers — while the Autobots and Black Knights will disagree at times, they are still a team and will work together without hesitation. By contrast, the Decepticons and Britannia are mostly united by shared interests, and really don't like working with other side, or each other. That being said, one difference between the Decepticons and Britannia is Megatron makes sure to keep his soldiers united and will not tolerate failure or dissension, while Charles rarely does anything useful to address the issue. This eventually culminates in the Decepticons wiping Britannia off the map at the end of R1.
    • Most of the Decepticons don't like working together with each other. Notably, none of the Decepticons, especially Onslaught and Barricade, like working with Starscream because of his cowardice, backstabbing nature, and being an ineffecient leader.
    • Because of the Decepticons' actions against Britannia at the end of R1, R2 shows that the Euro-Britannian higher-ups (except Shin) are less than pleased about working with the Decepticons. Gaudefroy is extremely displeased and Grand Duke Highland contacts Euphemia to tell her about this, as he doesn't trust the Decepticons himself, but doesn't want to provoke them in attacking. And a conversation between Oldrin and Ashley indicates that the Glinda Knights are planning to double-cross the Cons once the opportunity arises. This eventually culminates in the Decepticons taking over Euro-Britannia, and the Glinda Knights and Asura Strike Force manage to escape and go underground.
  • In Doors to the Unknown half of the group that is transported to Eberron is made of heroes, while the other is made of villains (with Taylor mostly neutral, despite claiming to be a hero). This is the frequent result of them being forced to work together. They manage to get along fairly well, but certain events, like the revelation of Alec's true name and family, cause rifts between them.
  • A New Kind of Fairy Queen: Erza Scarlet has a difficult time working with Harry Dresden and Susan Rodriguez to save Maggie.
    • She’s angry with Harry because he summoned her away from Maggie during an attack by the Red Court, which allowed the Reds to capture Maggie. While she acknowledges that he was just trying to save his daughter from a being who he had every reason to believe was a danger to her, even at great risk to himself, she still plans to kill him if Maggie dies.
    • She hates Susan for leaving Maggie in Red Court territory, knowing what could happen. As far as Erza is concerned, if they all survive, she’s amenable to giving Harry a chance to be part of his daughter’s life, but Susan has failed her too badly to forgive.
  • This trope highlights the more World of Warcraft side of Paradoxus since, in the canon, alliances are often formed grudgingly and only out of mutual interest:
    • Sky's severe neglect of his daughters after Bloom's death only got him negative points in the other characters' books. The Winx and most of the specialists no longer consider him a friend and only deal with him by virtue of him being Eraklyon's king, thus necessary to war strategies and whatnots.
    • Adis and Joan are the Vakdrak's leaders (only below Trisha in the hierarchy) and neither of them likes each other very much. In-Universe, Adis is described as Lawful Good while Joan leans towards Chaotic Neutral so naturally, their mindsets clash spectacularly. Even though the two of them are devoted to Trisha, when it comes to the means used to attach the heiress' goals, Adis and Joan never agree. It gets worse during Trisha's Roaring Rampage of Revenge.
    • Given how upbeat and emphasizing about the Power of Friendship Winx Club is, one would think Bloom's daughters would be a massive aversion of this trope. However, Trisha and Atalune do more than play it straight, they take it up to eleven due to them being stranged sisters since their mother died. They get physical with each other nearly every time they meet, weapons and magic included. As it is, they rarely pass time together unless there's some external reason to reunite them. In fact, Altalune has a rather toxic, jerkish coping mechanism by blaming Trisha for not being strong enough to protect their mother. The poor girl was only ten years at the time, so Altalune's attitude is totally uncalled for.
    • Another example happens between Altalune and Harmony. Altalune is an arrogant, narcissistic prick with a Hair-Trigger Temper while Harmony takes after her father, that is, she's insecure, sharp-tongued, and prone to jealousy. What's the matter, then (barring the obvious)? Well, Harmony has reached the peak of her powers and they pale in comparison to that of Bloom's daughters, especially Trisha, which causes her to envy and dislike them. She even comments out loud how "such unstable people should not be allowed to harness that much power" referring to Trisha, which Altalune doesn't take very well and lashes out (apparently, she's the only one allowed to torment poor Trisha). And yet, Harmony works in the Tyrannus Division where she's assigned an undercover mission to investigate the corrupt Council of Rocalucce, an entity that has rooted its tendrils in both Eraklyon and Domino's nobility. Something that very much concerns Altalune and Trisha as the respective heiress of these planets.
  • A Possible Encounter for a Phantom (Danny Phantom & Kim Possible): The villains of both series join forces in a group called The Faction to defeat their teen foes. Unlike Danny and Kim, who become very close and mutually attracted to each other, the villains have little respect for each other. Drakken plots to double-cross Vlad Plasmius, Shego and Skulker briefly bicker, his ex-girlfriend Ember joins, the Seniors are looked down on and nobody likes having Motor Ed around.
  • Twice Chosen (The Hunger Games & Power Rangers (2017)) Goes without saying, as the new team were all in a competition to kill each other before they found the Power Coins. Peeta explicitly notes to Katniss that the Tributes are used to operating on the premise that they'll be fighting alone in the Games and it's hard for them to adapt that experience to fighting with each other.
    • On a wider scale, even after Rita's defeat, Katniss is uncomfortable when President Coin of District Thirteen contacts her in her zord to offer an alliance after Thirteen's opening attacks caused significant collateral damage. Ultimately, Katniss recognises that the Rangers will need allies and offers to coordinate with Thirteen in future so long as more care is taken to avoid civilian casualties.
  • In The Matrix and Supernatural crossover Hunting Series part four - Ghostry Hunting this is how the ex-Agent Smith and Agent Moore have to work together because Moore betrayed the System and let an important child get temporarily kidnapped.
  • Infinity Crisis:
    • In Salvation Run, Felicity's words suggest that she and Laurel initially had this relationship while in captivity, but over time they have moved past their old issues.
    • Invoked in Brothers of Thunder when Loki of Earth-199999 and Lokia of Earth-911111 noted that they were both thinking of ways to betray each other the moment they started working together, and only avoided doing so because the current situation was dangerous enough that it needed both of them working together to stop it.
    • Brought up in Tomorrow's Guardians when the Orville crew express concern about working with the Krill, the Guardians and the Legends, as the Krill are likely to betray them once it's convenient and the Guardians and the Legends could cause chaos just picking up a lunch order, although their role in saving Xelaya does win the dimensionally-displaced heroes points.
  • In the Jackie Chan Adventures and W.I.T.C.H. crossover fanfic Kage (part of Project Dark Jade), Jade and Miranda have this dynamic, though it has been said that without Raythor, all the Knights would be at each other's throats.
  • Briefly features in Lighting the Path; when Johnny Sorrow and the Injustice Society capture Alan Scott and Doctor Alchemy as part of Sorrow’s latest plan, the Justice Society and the Flash's Rogues simultaneously attack the Injustice Society to rescue their respective allies. That said, the two teams are only working together in the sense that neither the Rogues or the JSA are attacking each other during the fight with the Injustice Society, the Rogues departing as soon as they’ve rescued Alchemy and leaving the JSA to deal with the side-effects of Sorrow’s plan.
  • Shadows over Meridian:
    • The six nobles leading the Sky Hunters are divided between their leader Vera Bexley and her most vocal rival Amelia Emmony. The tensions between them grow increasingly worse after Vera deceives them into embarking on an unsanctioned assassination attempt on Metalbeak and Amelia's misgivings rub off on the others as Vera stubbornly presses on despite all the hardships. Everyone has finally had enough inside the crystal mines where the odds have pushed them to their limits and when they decide to surrender, Vera spitefully abandons her friends to achieve her vendetta alone.
    • Amelia's relationship with another Sky Hunter named Alan Ascelot is almost as volatile as the one she has with Vera. Alan distrusts Amelia because he blames her family for the arrest and death of his grandfather, but he still promises to the others that he won't let his personal feelings affect their mission. When it comes down to it, they're both ready to jump to each other's aid, though.
  • "Shaking the Cycle" features a section where Dawn Thrace- the displaced Dawn Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) transplanted to Caprica and the sister of Kara Thrace (Battlestar Galactica (2003))- has to travel alongside Leoben after he finds her in the mountains. He makes a valid argument for why she shouldn't kill him and offers insight into a useful prophecy, but Dawn is naturally not comfortable working with a Cylon who contributed to the devastation of twelve planets.
  • In the Marvel Cinematic Universe/Harry Potter fic "Strange Potter", a key plot element is the subtle conflict between Doctor Strange and Professor Dumbledore. While both acknowledge that the other's intentions are good, Dumbledore is so fixated on his own ideas about factors such as the value of the prophecy and how reliable Snape is as an ally that he often disagrees with Strange's attempts to "modernise" the wizarding world. In essence, Dumbledore is more concerned with placating long-standing pure-blood families, where Strange is focused on helping those of non-magical heritage feel comfortable in their new world. As a result, Dumbledore is unaware that Strange has already extracted the horcrux from Harry and is hunting the others because he hasn't bothered to tell Strange about them himself, and Strange sees no point in being honest with a man who won't be honest with him in turn despite all Strange has done to prove they are at least allies against Voldemort.
  • There Was Once an Avenger From Krypton: The Masters of the Mystic Arts and the Miraculous Guardians are technically on the same side, but there's been friction between them for a while. The Guardians think that the Masters recklessly promote the use of the Miraculouses, long after the initial purpose of the activation has been fulfilled, for the sake of having allies to keep the balance of the magical world, while the Masters didn't like how overzealous the Guardians were in separating the Kwamis from their Chosen even when there wasn't any harm in letting them stay together. When the Guardians vanished, the Ancient One concluded that they were basically throwing a tantrum and sealing themselves away to force the Masters to take up their responsibilities.
  • In Voyages of the Wild Sea Horse, the Kamikaze Pirates initially don't get on with each other at all. Kodachi Kuno, Ukyo Kuonji and Shampooo are eager to verbally or even literally backstab each other for their shared mutual love interest and the first mate, Ryoga Hibiki, proudly defines himself as The Rival to their captain, Ranma Saotome, to the point he was only given the role of first mate because it was judged he was the least likely member of the crew to use it to screw over his other crewmates. That said, with Character Development they eventually tone it down to more a love of teasing each other (the girls), and cynical or sarcastic commentary whilst still obeying orders for Ryoga.
  • My Hero Academia: Unchained Predator: This is the basis for Izuku, Ochako, Shoto, Bakugou, Kirishima, Mirio, (after she is rescued) Melissa and later Miruko when dealing with the VX gas bomb and stalling Wolfram's group, Curator and the Volcano Thieves long enough for the Slayer to arrive and butcher all nine villains after dealing with the ballroom villains. While some of them are reluctant, they only agree to work with the Slayer as the alternate is ten times worse.

Danganronpa

  • Where Talent Goes to Die: There are more than a few cases of this.
    • The initial group for trying to find a way out consists of Miura, the main character and narrator, as well as Kurogane, whom Miura defeated in an exhibition match. While Miura tries to apologize, Kurogane still holds a grudge, which angers Edogawa and Sakuragi, the other two members of the group.
    • Once Mitamura becomes the leader of the group, Hoshino frequently questions or outright mocks her decisions, since he doesn't think much of her, and often believes her to be naive.
    • Downplayed with Mitamura and Edogawa, since Mitamura doesn't fully trust Edogawa, but is hesitant to say it outright.
    • After Mitamura is executed in the second trial, and Sugiura is outed as the Ultimate Poisoner, Sugiura and Hoshino are almost constantly at each other's throats, since Hoshino doesn't trust Sugiura and Sugiura, having stopped pretending to be polite, doesn't see any reason to hide her disdain for Hoshino. Surprisingly enough, the two are able to serve on guard duty together for a two-hour period, simply by not talking to each other the entire time.

Dark Moon: The Blood Altar

  • My Deepest, Darkest Secret: When they all found out Solon was kidnapped by hunters, Enzy suggests an alliance with the vampires so they have better odds at saving him. Despite everyone being clearly unhappy about it, the werewolves in particular acting extra hostile to the vampires (because they learned of what they did to Solon prior and are pissed as hell over it) and a few other complications, they actually worked pretty well together, from having managed to find the hunters' location, save Solon and got him out before Richard could go after him, to even killing the hunters' leader with teamwork. Bonus points for the chapter where this happens even having a similar name to the Trope Namer.

Disgaea

Dragon Age

  • Beyond Heroes: Of Sunshine and Red Lyrium: Varric and Cassandra have this going on just like in canon - but here it's actually more teeth-clenched, because the Inquisitor is Bethany Hawke and Varric sorely resents how Cassandra treated her as a prisoner. Bethany herself, meanwhile, has this for a while with Cullen, because she was a Circle mage in Kirkwall during his time as Knight-Captain and has some lingering resentment. Both instances improve as the story progresses.

Dungeons & Dragons

  • Vow of Nudity: The Genasi national symbol emphasizes the internal struggle between the four subraces to see themselves as superior to the other three. Each subrace displays it from a different orientation that leaves their own elemental design displayed at the proper angle.
    • In one story, Haara needs to team up with a graverobbing forest witch who attempted to sacrifice her to a demon lord. Neither are thrilled about having to work with the other to survive the journey back to the material plane.

Final Fantasy

  • Seventh Endmost Vision: Sephiroth has this kind of relationship with the Planet, which doesn't trust him due to his still-present Jenova heritage... but the changes in the backstory have put him in the position of being the only person in the slums who can hear the Planet at all. And Ifalna's connection with him means he's the only person she'd trust with Holy.

Food Wars!

  • Nouvelle: This is pretty much the premise where Erina and Soma, who don't get along as a result of their opposing philosophies on their cooking methods, are forced to work together for a Shokugeki match.

Fusion Fic

Godzilla / King Kong / MonsterVerse

  • Abraxas (Hrodvitnon): Mariko is working for Alan Jonah as a Reluctant Mad Scientist since being presumed dead by Monarch, and she makes it clear from the beginning that she's only working for Jonah out of necessity, but she grows more and more reluctant to work with him after she becomes aware of the Vivienne-San hybrid he's keeping caged and experimenting on, being forced to herself oversee some of the more torturous experiments. It culminates with her allying with Viv and San to stage an escape from the Elaborate Underground Base.

Harry Potter

  • Seventh Endmost Vision: Sephiroth has this kind of relationship with the Planet, which doesn't trust him due to his still-present Jenova heritage... but the changes in the backstory have put him in the position of being the only person in the slums who can hear the Planet at all. And Ifalna's connection with him means he's the only person she'd trust with Holy.

The Hunger Games

  • Saving the Boy: As much as Katniss and even Haymitch come to dislike (if not outright hate) Misu, they still fulfill their duties as her mentors due to district loyalty and send her sponsorship gifts. In fact, because Katniss is the only female victor of District Twelve, that makes her Misu's official mentor, even though the two of them despise each other.

Invader Zim

  • Invader Zim: A Bad Thing Never Ends: While both work for Zim in exchange for being allowed to stay on Earth, Bob and the Announcer cannot stand each other. And for that matter, they don't like Skoodge or even Zim all that much either.
  • The New Adventures of Invader Zim:
    • When Steve and Viera are first introduced, they don't get along very well, due to their different views on what takes priority in paranormal studies, which badly affects their functionality as a team. Fortunately, Dib helps them get over this.
    • Tak and Tenn likewise do not work well together at all to start with. They only reluctantly eventually agree to put aside their differences and move forward, but time will tell how this works out.

Kim Possible

  • "Other Side of the Mirror" features Kim and Ron facing their evil counterparts from an alternate universe. While the evil Kim and Ron are able to equal their counterparts in direct confrontation, Kim and Ron soon realise that their counterparts don't have as strong a relationship as they do, allied more out of convenience than any sense of trust or love; Ron manages to provoke them into fighting each other by taking his counterpart hostage and making the other Kim think he's poisoned his other self, the other Kim's lack of concern prompting the other Ron to attack her.

The Legend of Zelda

  • The End of All Things: This describes Zach and Midna at the beginning. Zach is a snarky Jerkass who is rude, Midna is a snarky princess who is also rude. They need to work together because Zach (generally) knows what's going on and Midna has magic powers that greatly help Zach fight and get around while in wolf form.
  • Ruin of the Yiga: The Yiga are technically working with Astor. Except Astor blatantly thinks he's in charge while the Yiga are incompetent idiots, so neither side actually likes the other. Kogha decides not to kill Link largely because Astor told him to kill Link, which kicks off most of the plot.

Lyrical Nanoha

  • Game Theory: Megane does not get along with Lindy due to a personality clash and a bad first impression. Chrono and Yuuno also got off on the wrong foot. They all still work together to stop Precia.

Marvel Comics

  • In The Amazing Spider-Man: True Purpose, Rogue basically seems set to be the member of the Unity Squad who has the most difficulty with Spider-Man as the team's leader, to the extent that she is the only member openly angry about how Spider-Man is alive instead of Xavier (Logan, Carol, Ben and Hope are definitely Peter’s friends, Thor and Wanda liked both men but weren’t especially close to either, and Havok is more willing to let the matter go). Ben Grimm in particular objects to the idea of joining the team simply because he would have to work with Rogue, although Spider-Man convinces him to join regardless because when the team’s goal is to improve relations between the Avengers and the X-Men Peter doesn’t want to fire Rogue simply because she doesn’t get along with him.
  • The New Teacher: Spider-Man has to confront all four of his major Goblin adversaries- the Green Goblin, the Roderick Kingsley Hobgoblin, the reborn Jason Macendale 'Cybergoblin' and the also-restored Demogoblin- when the entity known as Shadow Spider attempts to sacrifice Spider-Man for power. Although the Goblins prove to be so dangerous that the X-Men have to save Peter, none of the four Goblins are entirely happy at having to work together, only going along with the alliance out of fear of what Shadow Spider will do to them if they fail.
  • A Prize for Three Empires: Carol Danvers and Rogue don't like each other, but they manage to leave their private feud aside for the sake of a mission.

Miraculous Ladybug

  • Cheshire (Miraculous Ladybug): Marinette/Cheshire was willing to work with other Miraculous Holders to defeat Akumas, but after being attacked by Misterbug and Pegasus, she is far more reticent. She fights the Akumas at the side of Misterbug's team, but always careful to prevent attacks from them.
  • Cut My Life Into Pieces, This Is My Last Resort has a one-sided example on Chat Noir's part, who's grown increasingly frustrated with Ladybug's lies and secrecy. The straw that breaks the camel's back is when Marinette reveals herself to still be alive, but he still doesn't know that she's Ladybug, which only makes him angrier with the latter. This leads to him temporarily breaking off his partnership with her after she claims that Hawk Moth is Gabriel Agreste.
Chat Noir: I’ve had enough. If I want to talk, I will call you. Otherwise, unless there’s an akuma, you stay the hell away from me. We are finished.
    • A much straighter example is Hawk Moth and Volpina. Gabriel loathes her for her sadistic torment of an innocent girl and her harassment of Adrien, even flat-out calling her "repulsive and reprehensible." But this doesn't stop him from Akumatizing her and using her to to gaslight Chat Noir.
  • LadyBugOut: Chat Noir gets jealous of the newly chosen heroes when Ladybug chooses to introduce the concept of power-ups to them right away, on Master Fu's suggestion. Further friction is caused by his flirting and continued refusal to take matters seriously, until finally he gets Caught on Tape lashing out at Ladybug and gets stripped of the Ring.
  • The One to Make It Stay: Chat Noir is very unhappy about Ladybug bringing new heroes into play, insisting that they don't need any help — least of all from Viperion, whom he sees as a potential romantic rival. This swiftly grows into an outright refusal to work with the rest of the team, resulting in Miracle Queen successfully stealing his Ring and delivering it to Hawkmoth.
  • The only reason Chat Noir is willing to work with Scarlet Lady at all is because she's the only one who can use Lucky Charm to restore everything back to normal once the akuma's defeated. Beyond that, the two of them can't STAND each other.
  • Truth and Consequences:
    • Enemy Mine aside, Ladybug and Hawk Moth still despise each other. At one point, Adrien even wonders if they couldn't just hide from the two until the partnership implodes on its own.
    • The rest of Team Miraculous with Mayura (Luka). Though, in his defense his Miraculous is infected with something worse than an akuma.
    • When everything goes to pot, all of the heroes make it very clear that nothing is forgiven where Marinette's concerned, but they still choose to put aside their grudge to stop Hawk Moth.
    • In Mending Warped Designs, there's a one-sided example on Chat Noir's part. He absolutely hates having to work with Ladybug again, and for the most part regards her as simply a necessary evil at best, and as The Load at worst. Ladybug, on the other hand, desperately wants to make amends with him by any means, despite fully resigning herself to the fact that he will likely never love or even tolerate her again. This even includes Taking the Bullet for Chat Noir to prove that she's sincere. It's this that convinces him that she's truly changed. Adrien's equally unhappy about working with Nathalie, and even outright admits in Chapter 22 that he hates her.
My-HiME
  • Perfection Is Overrated: Like in My-HiME, the Himes don't always get along, in particular suspecting Nao of attacking Yukariko, and Nao being bitter over being suspected. Nao does cooperate with the other Himes because even she is horrified by what Hitomi is doing. Over time, the group begins to work better together in response to the threat of the SUEs.
From here on out, survival required cooperating with the others, and while Nao was reluctant to get along with her fellow Himes, she realized she had no choice but to do things that were difficult for her in order to survive.
The same went for the rest of the Himes.

My Little Pony

  • A Hollow in Equestria: This is an early plot element as the Mane Six are stuck working with Ulquiorra on several missions, with neither party really caring for the tactics or outlook of the other. Ulquiorra is far too brutal and all too willing to kill whatever threat comes along, while the ponies are far too optimistic and willing to spare creatures that could destroy the kingdom if given a second chance.
  • Misunderstandings: Sveti a griffin only works with Wisk, the pony who held her captive in a sideshow, to cook a nutritional meal for Peter, the human who was also held captive, since it was Peter who freed her.
    • Sergeant Peppermint York despises Peter and works with a few of the nobles to convince ponies that he is dangerous monster to be locked up. But it is clear York can't stand the nobles, since they only see targeting Peter as an opportunity to discredit Princess Twilight, and show no concern for the innocents who get hurt, while York does genuinely believe Peter is dangerous and he did, albeit accidentally, seriously wound a Royal Guard and becomes more infuriated with conspirators who endanger innocents than with Peter being free.

Naruto

  • Legacy of the Rasengan I: Team 7 in all its glory. Naruto is the only one who actually tries to make them True Companions, but it's a little difficult, what with Sasuke's Inferiority Superiority Complex having him nurse a bruised ego and jealousy at Naruto being better than him (he calls Naruto out on being pragmatic, sneaky, secretive... y'know, the way an actual professional ninja acts). Sakura shows a lack of foresight and betrays Naruto's trust to impress Sasuke, which has Naruto viciously beat her down verbally. Kakashi's teaching method doesn't endear Sakura to him (by the time he wants to teach her, Tsunade has already taken over as her sensei) and Naruto considers him more a superior rather than teacher and hardly trusts him (teaching Sasuke one of Naruto's jutsu when he promised on his honor not to, pissed Naruto off), which causes him considerable grief.
  • True Potential: During the Kiri Civil War arc, Hinata is forced to work with Ao, a rebel shinobi who had taken a Byakugan eye from an Hyuga he killed in the previous war. Ao thinks of her as a self-righteous hypocrite since Hinata wouldn't care if that Hyuga killed Ao instead, while Hinata sees him as representing the entire reason for the Hyuga Clan's division.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion: Genocide: Asuka didn't like or trust rookie pilot Keiko and had a hard time working with and fighting alongside her.
  • Rise of the Minisukas: Even when several Angels are forced to team up, they are more likely to bicker or fight each other than engaging the Evas.
They're just standing there, attack them!
No, they're obviously having pre-battle banter, it would be impolite to interrupt.
…The pain of being forcibly fused to you pales in comparison to the pain of interacting with you.
I assure you, the feeling is mutual.

Odd Squad

  • Olive's Last Partner: Oprah sends Olive, Otto and Oscar down to the Mechanical Rooms to deal with the Blobisite. This is much to the annoyance of Olive, who realizes that she has to deal with Oscar, the agent that she's hated for a long time due to him abandoning her and his Investigation work to become a Scientist instead, which is explained in the sequel story Ships Ahoy!.

The Owl House

  • In Luz and Hunter's Roadtrip Extravaganza, Luz and Hunter find themselves stranded in Dallas, Texas, when they are still butting heads with each other because the former is learning to be a wild witch and the latter is supporting Belos' tyranny. Being forced to team up as they trek to Connecticut for a portal back to the Boiling Isles causes a lot of squabbling.

Phineas and Ferb

  • Second American Civil War: A villainous example. The Council of Sanford has two major factions, the Royals and the Patriots. The Royals provided the funding because they felt they were naturally superior to everyone else; the Patriots did the dirty work because they felt the country was being led astray. After seeing the excess of the Royals, many Patriots wonder if they really did the right thing.

Pokémon

Prehistoric Park

  • Prehistoric Park Reimagined:
    • Leon and Jack have quite high difficulty getting along at first due to Jack's considering Leon The Load and Leon's considering Jack The Bully. It ultimately isn't until a particularly ill-timed argument between them almost gets Drew killed, and the subsequent suspension from taking part in rescue missions that Drew slams them with as a result, that they finally work to improve their standing together.
    • Nikolai and Kyle likewise spend a considerable amount of time bickering and sniping at each other due to Nikolai erroneously believing that Kyle has zero faith in his underlings and Kyle himself not appreciating how Nikolai himself seemingly views Kyle and the Prehistoric Park keepers as incompetent idiots. It isn't until Drew finally has the sensibility to force them to put aside their enmity during the onset of a vicious crisis being caused at the park by a tropical storm that they finally start treating each other with proper respect.

Whoniverse

  • The Legacy of Gallifrey: The Valeyard, Omega and Rassilon are working with Davros to save Gallifrey and Skaro from their destruction in the Time War, but each acknowledge they would turn on each other if it weren’t for their hatred of the Doctor and their desire to see that their two species survive.

Unsorted/Dormant/Dead

  • A Brighter Dark: Hans considers Mozu to be an irritating whiny brat, while Mozu considers Hans to be a murderous brute. The two are forced to work together along with Sakura to escape the Nohrian army.
  • In Chronicles of Harmony's End, Discord convinces his mortal enemy (and lawful opposite) Array to help him kill Harmony. They fully intend to betray each other afterward.
  • In Cissnei's Path, a Final Fantasy VII fanfic, Crimson (Cissnei) and Tifa don't get along all that well, due to their pasts serving Shinra and AVALANCHE respectively. Crimson notes that the previous incarnation of the terrorist group caused no shortage of problems and she dragged Cloud into the reactor bombing, while Tifa points out that Shinra (and especially the Turks) silence anyone that opposes them through normal means and are causing lasting damage to the Planet. That being said, they both take measures to make sure that it doesn't interfere with their collective mission because the sheer opposition they face means that they can't afford to let it get in the way.
  • Cycles Upon Cycles: Although they are now nominally allies, the StarCraft races are still rather wary of each other and prefer to keep out of each others' business when possible. They keep up the appearance of a more unified front for the sake of the Citadel races. On a smaller scale, Shepard and Miranda Lawson, who despite being Commander and XO, have some unpleasant history.
"I'm not asking for us to be friends, Miranda; hell, I'm not even asking for a clean slate. All I want is for the people under us to know that we aren't trying to kill each other. So... truce?"
  • In Despair's Last Resort, Shigeru and Ryouta both have problems getting along with the other students. Shigeru sees most of the others as idiots who aren't worth his time and takes it on himself to act as a leader. It doesn't work out, as he's dead in the third chapter after trying to murder Shizuka. Ryouta on the other hand, is paranoid of the others and doesn't trust them. Even going to lengths like hiding away after the reveal of a new motive. After acting this way nearly gets him convicted as the second chapter's murderer, he gets better and slowly starts to trust the others. He even manages to try and help them. He makes it to the end and survives.
  • Dungeon Keeper Ami has several examples:
    • Keeper Mercury herself and her Horned Reaper, who hate each other but work together to escape their situations.
    • Cathy and Jadeite constantly clash with each other, ever since their first meeting, but will always work together to protect Mercury at all costs.
    • The Avatar and Rabixtrel, bitter rivals who end up fighting side to side when they both side with Mercury against the forces of the Underworld.
    • Crowned Death and Azzathra would normally be at war with each other, but they decide to join forces to destroy Keeper Mercury.
  • Fate: Zero Sanity: Anytime Avenger arrives on the battlefield, you can expect any other Servants on that field to stop whatever they were doing and try to kill him. This occurs even if the Servants in question don't have an official alliance and even if they were just in the middle of killing each other. He's that big of a threat.
  • In Power Girl fanfic A Force of Four, Badra and three Kryptonian outlaws form an alliance to destroy Power Girl and the Amazons but they can't stand each other. They barely manage to work together, but Badra tends to treat them as servants and they often point out they outnumber her.
  • In Supergirl story Hellsister Trilogy, Superman and Dev-Em don't like each other. Like, at all. Dev-Em bullied Kal-El when he was Superboy, attempted to frame up him for vandalism and got away with it. He's reformed since, but he's still a jerkass, and he's dating Superman's beloved cousin. Yet still, they try to fight together during the War against Darkseid, albeit it's clear they can't stand each other.
  • Happens a lot in The Night Unfurls.
    • Original version:
      • Kyril and Claudia, due to their opposing philosophies, as well as how Claudia's husband is put under protective custody by Kyril for being a potential traitor. Despite this, they are still on the same side fighting against the Black Dogs.
      • Inevitably happens when Olga and the Seven Shields cooperate. Just because she is a former Evil Overlord that goes through a Heel–Face Turn doesn't mean that she's Easily Forgiven. There's also the begrudging alliance between Olga and the former dark elf slaves from Loraine (Grace especially), the city Olga sacrificed to the orcs to Rape, Pillage, and Burn in exchange for them fighting for her cause. The reason why both parties don't try to kill each other is the fear of incurring Kyril's wrath.
    • Remastered version:
      • For an example involving two groups, the dark elves and the orcs. Chloe's P.O.V. reveals that there are occasions where orc chieftains go rogue and attack the dark elf soldiers, despite being on the same side. Considering how the orcs are depicted as Always Chaotic Evil greenskin savages, as well as the origin of the "alliance" between the two groups (mentioned in the above entry), this is understandable.
      • Alicia and Kyril. Mainly on Alicia's side, because of his sinister appearance, his dangerous reputation of hunting down orc war bands by himself, his disrespect/apathy towards authority, his dispassionate attitude, and the fact that her cousin Prim is somehow on cordial terms with him. Kyril, on the other hand, admits that he doesn't appreciate Alicia's barbed words from his internal P.O.V., though he sees her as a minor irritation as time passes. In spite of this, the two are on the same team since Alicia has to fulfil Celestine's task of bringing her skilled agents, and Kyril happens to be the one.
      • Among the Great Escape party, Chloe has a hard time working with... anyone who is not Olga. Chloe and Fredrick, especially, are itching to insult and draw their blades to each other. The Fantastic Racism between humans and dark elves doesn't help matters.
  • Once More with Feeling: Gendo and SEELE work together to destroy the Angels, although they mistrust and hate each other.
Their investigations had uncovered that there was some kind of friction between SEELE and their point man at Central. As far as Kaji had understood and explained it, the goals of SEELE and Gendo meshed well until some undetermined point in the future, at which point… things would probably happen.
Both sides pretended it wasn't the case, but both sides knew the truth and were constantly maneuvering for position even as they worked together closely on what they needed to cooperate on.
  • Tales of the Emperasque:
    • The Imperium and Craftworld Eldar work together, to their own mutual distaste, because they're the only races left in the galaxy actually willing - to some extent - to cooperate.
    • Blood Ravens and Space Wolves aren't exactly fond of each other - cough, Ravens kidnapping Wolves' oldest marine, cough - but they fight together nevertheless.
  • In This Bites!, Cross attempts to invoke this trope when he meets Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine again by exposing Mr. 0's identity to them, putting them on Baroque Works' hit list too. Unfortunately, the Unluckies aren’t around to witness it, so all that it accomplishes is reaffirming their desires to kill him.
  • In Those Gilded Chains We Wear Bellatrix LeStrange, predicting that Lord Voldemort will likely lose the Battle of Hogwarts and, not wanting to go to Azkaban again, approaches Hermione Granger with a conditional surrender. Hermione, not liking her chances of surviving the next five minutes, makes it into an Unbreakable Vow with the added condition that should one die, so would the other. Naturally, the Death Eaters that escape the battle aren't too happy that Bellatrix got off so lightly, forcing the Death Eater and the muggleborn to fight together to save their mutual lives.
  • In Thousand Shinji, the Warhammer 40,000 Gods hate each other, but they were forced to team up to defeat the C'Tan.
  • Turtles is a retelling of Girls und Panzer in which Koume Akaboshi, the girl Miho saved, comes to Oarai with her. In the fic, Koume ends up crewing Turtle Team's Pz 38(t) alongside the student council despite the fact that she still resents the student council for pressganging Miho into doing tankery.
  • In With Strings Attached, the four are forced to travel with the Hunter on their quest for the third Vasyn piece. They can't stand him, he can't stand them, but they have to stay with him because they have no other way to the Vasyn piece, and he has to stay with them because his god told him to.
    • Also in Strings is the uneasy alliance of Brox and Co. with the Raleka. Each side is contemptuous of the other, but they need one another to put together the Vasyn and move it around.
