Tear Jerker / The Unexpectables

Go To

Main Series

  • The fate of Raunfault, the first enemy the Unexpectables face. Once the king to a kingdom of sky giants, he feared the idea of being forgotten to history, eventually meeting Stillhavity who tempted him with a deal for immortality. When Raunfault accepted, Stillhavity took control of his body and had him slaughter every human and sky giant on the Continent, with Raunfault helpless to do anything in his undying body until the Unexpectables end up destroying the object that kept him alive.
  • Task losing the last of his sister's possessions during the course of the Solly arc.
  • The death of LYS, the party's mysterious helper, who's the only person who's been able to help the group get past their flaws.
  • Remy while he's being held captive by the United Orun Clergy. He's been starved, beaten to near death, and watched his friends be tossed into the ocean to die. Despite his defiant words his voice sounds utterly broken. It's no wonder he has PTSD long after this event.
  • The truth of why Panic's mother left him. While on a break from feeding Omnimaw, Euphoria met Sergei and ended up falling for him. Fearing any potential backlash due to her Tiefling features, she disguised herself as a normal human and began to court him. They ended up a couple and, by all accounts, were happy together...until Euphoria gave birth to Panic/Vergil, who was obviously a Tiefling. This ended up causing Sergei to freak out, due to the fact that Euphoria lied to him for so long, and he ended up deciding to lie to her later on about him drowning Panic to get her to leave. What makes it even worse is when Panic thinks back to his issues with his father, racial issues were never mentioned, meaning that Euhoria disguised herself and accidently ruined her relationship for nothing.
  • Stendin's funeral. We see all of the city guard, including Doros and Brorc, trying and failing to hold back their tears. Remy's eulogy especially tugs at the heartstrings.
    • The party visits Marcus Sweet's grave to pay their respects and thank him for his sacrifice.
    • Digsby helps Task say a prayer in honor of his sisters. We haven't seen Task get this vulnerable before, and you can hear him choking up and trying to hold back sobs when he speaks.
    • The long awaited meet up between Scarlet and Euphoria ends up being a lot more melancholic than anyone thought thanks to Scarlet's insecurities about her mother abandoning her flaring up, ending with Scarlet coldly departing from the group, with Panic noticeably deflating because of it.
  • Panic's desperate attempts to help Scarlet during the Dragon Cult's raid of Alivst. After getting separated from Hellina and Borky, he tries his best to get to their house so they can move to the Sweet Dragon for shelter, only for a Dragon to come in and notice his rush to reach their house. With the use of Dimension Door, he's able to get into their house and notice a secret basement that they might be in... only for the Dragon to wreck the house, leading to Panic suffocating to death under the rubble after he overshot Dimension Door and took damage from it. While he does get resurrected soon after, the fact that Panic was killed trying to see if one of his loved ones is safe is rather tragic.
    • The next episode has a reveal that makes it worse: Scarlet wasn't even in the house, so he did it all for nothing.
  • Combined with Nightmare Fuel, the fate of the Earth Plane town of Terra's Soil. The entire population of the town was slaughtered by Donkutsu's minions, with a handful of corpses used as puppets to lure in unsuspecting travelers and other survivors. The party defeats the monsters responsible, but are understandably distraught. Seika sings a lament mourning the townsfolk and Greckles leaves during the night, staring at one of his daggers with the implication that he is considering committing seppuku before Remy talks him down. Before the party leaves the following morning, Panic collects the drumsticks of a young musician he had spent time with the day before.
  • When the party finally confronts Donkutsu, Seika dies at the Oni's hands, making him the first combat-related party death in the campaign. Greckles and Remy are spurred into a Roaring Rampage of Revenge and Greckles spends a good few minutes after the fight sobbing over Seika's body before tearfully asking Panic if he can do anything. Panic, fortunately, is able to successfully resurrect Seika with the Raise Dead spell.
    • Even sadder is that Borky didn't immediately realize what happened and picked up Seika's body while thinking that one of his comrades was simply down and in need of assistance. The other players noted how absolutely heartbreaking that was.

Spin-Offs

  • The finale of the Ravenloft campaign ending with a burial for Calamity and Sumer. Adding to the moment are the reactions of Sophia, who is aghast that Sumer was brought back just to die again, and declares that her freedom is meaningless when the cost was so high; Ray, who is absolutely broken (and breaks a pew) after "history repeats" and yet another person he was close to is taken from him; and Kapnos, who has failed his vow to help send his new friends home, and now vows to one day inform Calamity's sister of the faun's sacrifice...despite the party apparently being no closer to escaping Barovia than when the campaign begun.
