Tearjerker / The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

Go To

  • When Christine tears the Phantom's mask away in front of the whole crowd, it's a triumphant moment for her for resisting and rebelling against his continued hold over her... But he looks crestfallen. When his mask has been removed previously he has immediately, compulsively covered his scar out of shame, both as a child and when having an otherwise intimate time alone with her in his lair. But after she seems to meet his advances head-on and we see how deeply she affects him in return during The Point of No Return, when she subsequently rips it away he just stands there staring at her in betrayal and disappointment so strong that it overrides even his lifelong ingrained urge to hide his face from the onlooking crowd.
  • Christine mouthing 'I love you' to Raoul as the Phantom ties him to the gate.
  • At the end, the Phantom's sitting there alone, crying, and looks up to see Christine. She takes a few steps toward him, and when the camera moves back to him his open mouth moves into the slightest hint of a smile. He actually thinks that Christine has decided to stay with him, and then she has to silently take off the ring he gave her destroy his hopes again. After he tells her that he loves her, she looks so sad, because she wants nothing more than to comfort him but there's absolutely nothing she can do.
    • As Raoul and Christine sail out of the lair, Christine looks back at the Phantom and watches him before they disappear out of sight.
  • The elderly Raoul resting the Phantom's music box on Christine's tombstone, and freezing in shock as he sees the Phantom's trademark rose there as well—with Christine's ring around it. Both men finally and simultaneously accepting her relationship with the other.
  • Carlotta's loss of her boyfriend Piangi. Despite the fact we got very little screen time with them, you can see how much they adored each other. And her voice full of despair when she finds him dead, is heartwrenching.
