Tear Jerker / The Glass Scientists

Go To

Although the comic is genuinely funny, it doesn't come without its fair share of tear-jerkers; especially when considering just how miserable our protagonist's life is.

  • Jasper's anxiety keeping him from making proper friends with the rest of the residents save for Rachel and Jekyll.
  • Jekyll's Broken Pedestal moment when Frankenstein, the person he has idolized since his childhood and whose research inspired his career, outright insults him and takes to actively ruining his reputation among the other scientists using her own as leverage. Why? She was there and she could.
    • As it is: Jekyll has been almost working himself to death to provide for people who, when push came to shove, completely turned their backs on him for a stranger.
    • It's an Ironic Echo of Hyde's gloating in Chapter 1 when he voices Jekyll's fear of the people he leads not caring about him or valuing his efforts.
  • Flashbacks to Jekyll's past suggest that the experiment that split him might have been an elaborate suicide attempt or at least a desperate but unfortunately poor attempt from Jekyll at curing his own depression. Hyde's birth was the first time he felt genuinely happy and relaxed in ages.
  • Jekyll's mental stability starting to deteriorate when the stress and lack of sleep finally catch up to him, allowing Hyde to summons hallucinations so strong he can't shut them out. As a result, Jekyll begins to actively avoid his friends and the other residents of the Society out of fear. He instead spends all of his waking hours (which happen to be all hours of the day) working with Jasper: who by Hyde's statement seems to be the only person left who can make Jekyll feel safe and therefore is the only person in whose company the hallucinations don't take root.
  • Lanyon and Jekyll genuinely loving one another but being unable to act upon it due to social norms of their time and Lanyon being an Armoured Closet Bisexual. Lanyon even actively avoids or rejects Jekyll's attempts at intimacy, only to later "hit the bar" out of seeming jealousy when Jekyll dances with the women at his father's ball.
    • This is complicated further by Jekyll lashing out when Lanyon tries to instigate physical contact to comfort him after he escapes the ball.
  • Jekyll having a mental breakdown in the middle of Lanyon's ball. He can at this point no longer tell what's real and what's a hallucination and goes so far as to hide among the flowers outside the estate, thinking they are Bethlam asylum. In his panic he even shares to Lanyon that he thinks he is being haunted by Moreau, rightfully worrying the former.
  • The reveal of why Rachel is so protective of Hyde, her brother Eli, who Hyde resembles greatly, was being chased by the police for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up slipping on a wet fire escape well trying to scale the ladder, causing him to fall to his death below.
  • The dreaded break up scene between Jekyll and Lanyon is horrible from both sides. The implication that Lanyon’s father did something to force Robert into an arranged marriage with a woman he doesn’t care about against his will. Lanyon lashing out in the heat of the moment when questioned about it towards Jekyll only to seemingly regret it immediately afterwards. Jekyll being treated like everything they had together meant nothing to Lanyon. Lanyon cultivating Jekyll’s own hatred and internalised biphobia towards himself by accusing him of potentially deciding to leave Robert for a woman at some point. Jekyll unable to say anything to protest from the shock of everything. Neither of them able to properly talk about it and convincing themselves that they’re alright with everything that’s happening. Overall, it’s a mess. It takes a long time, but they reconcile and get back together.
  • Dr. Frankenstein opening up about Elizabeth and Henry. She is a selfish jerk, but she deeply regrets what happened to them and misses them.
