Most of the B-5 kids have a common link between them: their parents were awful, awful people. Almost all of them were either neglected or verbally abused, to the point that most either took on a bad attitude or rejected their parents in return. It gets worse once the kids find out they are all clones of their parents. Not only were they just being used for their bodies, their parents didn't even consider them their own children. Some examples of how to not raise your child:
Kanata was pushed by his father into training and participating in sports nonstop. Initially Kanata thought it was just because his father wanted to fulfill his dreams through his son. Kanata, for his part, does try to step away from his dad's dream in order to achieve his own dream of space exploration; although his father doesn't really care what Kanata does, just as long as he takes care of his body. Once you know he's a clone of his dad, that previous sentence takes on a more sinister meaning.
Quitterie was ignored by her mother and raised entirely by servants. Once Funicia comes into the picture, her mother dumps the responsibility of caring for her to Quitterie.
Zack's father was cold towards him, never truly taking interest in what his son does. When he was little, Zack found a picture he had drawn for his father in the trash. Considering Zack's origins, it made sense that he never saw his son as a person.
Ulgar's parents neglected him, not caring for him one bit. Only his brother, Finn, truly loved him; when he died, Ulgar's father said that he wished it was him that died, not his brother. Even after years in prison, Ulgar's father can only see Finn's image in the grown-up Ulgar.
Yun-hua's mother made her daughter not stand out in any way, verbally abusing her about how useless she was and not allowing her to pursue her passion to sing. It becomes clear why her mother did this once you realize that Yun-hua's a clone of her mother.
Luca's adopted parents rejected him because he wasn't their true son, and once they discovered that he is intersex. He never met his biological father before, only hearing that he was some poor artist that couldn't raise him.
Charce and his parents got into fights about him hanging out with a peasant girl, and he left home once she went into a coma. That story was fake, of course, but Charce's true origins are somehow even worse. He was raised from the get-go knowing he was a vessel of the king of Vixia, and brainwashed to not even consider himself human. Princess Seira was his only friend in the castle, but then she was assassinated by a noble desiring the throne, all while Charce watched. The king threw him in a dungeon for a year until he was assigned the mission to kill the rest of Team B-5, all while believing that he deserves to die because he "failed" his purpose as the king's vessel.
The only ones with relatively happy childhood are Funicia and Aries mostly because they are adopted, but Funi's parents did die before she was adopted by Quitterie's family.
Watching the kids become a family over the course of the adventure can bring a tear to your eye, especially as they get closer to home.
Polina's situation is just saddening: first her ship crashes on an extremely hostile planet, then the rest of her teammates disappear when they go off to search the planet. She goes into cryogenic hibernation in order to wait for help, and reawakens 12 years later. Then it turns out that none of the kids on the ship know what Earth is, and finds out that her home planet was abandoned long ago while she was asleep. And that due to the government rewinding history back 100 years, she was actually in hibernation for 112 years.
When you compare the kids to their parents, it becomes apparent that they Used to Be a Sweet Kid, and perhaps decent people. But once they cloned themselves, it becomes very clear they only treat their clones as nothing more than a body to Body Surf into just to relive their Glory Days. It's no wonder after they were sent to prison that the main cast grew to be respectable adults by the time of the Time Skip.
