  • The First Store Has George and Louise reminisce about how the planning stages for “Jefferson Cleaners” were disrupted by the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The day after, George turns down a loan after being pressured by a bigoted banker to move the location from Harlem. The episode ends with George, Louise and Lionel tearfully listening to King’s “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech on the radio.

  • The death of Zara Cully, as The Character Died With Her. While no episode was done to explain the circumstances of Mother Jefferson's passing, the episode "Where's Papa" dealt with George trying to locate his father's grave so he could honor his wishes of being buried next to his wife. In the process, he hires a hypnotist who makes George relive the day his father was buried, when George was only 9 years old.
