Tear Jerker / Rise of the Tomb Raider

  • We find out through logs that Sam does not want to see Lara anymore, if you read the comics, you find that the main reason why is because Sam was having horrific visions of herself as Himiko (hinting that part of her soul still resides in Sam's body) and ended up in jail after possibly being possessed and assaulting someone, as a result she pushed Lara away out of desperation and fear. Sad to see that things have not improved between the two since then.
  • Jacob's sacrifice. Mortally wounded, he willingly gives up his life so Lara can destroy the Divine Source and the Deathless with it. All the more poignant because he's the Prophet, and has lived for centuries because of its power. He meets his death with a sense of relief and expectation.
  • Almost the entirety of Blood Ties, and learning the circumstances behind the disappearance of Amelia Croft, Lara's mother. As Lara explores the Croft Manor to find proof of her death so that the rights to Croft Manor will be transferred to her and that Amelia's brother Atlas can finally stop pestering her, we learn throughout the DLC about how Lara's parents met, how her mother had to choose between Richard and her family, their marriage, and so on. It would all have been so heartwarming (in which it was, to be honest)...if not for the fact that an expedition to Tibet would change everything.
    • To start with, Richard had been researching on immortality for quite some time now, and he had eventually been able to find out about the Elixir of Life in Tibet. Unfortunately, Amelia told Atlas about it, and knowing him, he'd threaten to expose what Richard had been doing. Amelia convinced Richard to go on alone and that she'll take care of Atlas, and in the following week, she'd fly over there. Albeit with resistance, Richard accepts.
    • The plane crashed. Though Amelia survived the crash, she later on died of her wounds as rescue came too late. Richard was so wrought with grief that he closed the entirety of the West Wing, and became obsessed with bringing her back to life, doing everything he can. It didn't work. Eventually he laid her to rest beneath Croft Manor.
    • Amelia's final letter to him was purely heartbreaking, and it would be Harsher in Hindsight when her request for him to be the father Lara deserves did not come to light. As does her final letter to Lara.
