BEWARE OF SPOILERS.
Season 1
4 - Lady Penelope
- The murder of Esme, and Alfred arriving too late to save her.
5 - Shirley Bassey
- Esme's funeral. Alfred isn't The Stoic for long during the burial, bursting in tears when the coffin is lowered into the ground. At one point, he wants to jump in her grave to join her, and Bazza and Dave Boy have to hold him back.
- Thomas and Martha watch the funeral from afar, and Martha starts saying it's her fault, then she can't hold it anymore and leaves. It's even more of a tearjerker knowing that one day her son will feel the same way about her death.
- Alfred is still crying when he has a conversation with "Spanish", who appears as a manifestation of his guilt.
10 - Marianne Faithful
- Alfred finding himself forced to kill his own father Arthur, who has gone too far in his fanaticism and loyalty to the Raven Society and is about to commit a major atrocity after the end of the coup by blowing up the Queen, the Prime Minister, the whole government and himself at a dinner.
Season 2
- Archbishop Potter being Driven to Suicide.
- Bazza's death while trying to retrieve Alfred's money.
- He ends up in yet another Dead Person Conversation with a guilt-ridden Alfred.
- Bet Sykes' backstory: she had a sister who drowned by accident at age 11. It contributed to shape the "callous yet-fragile underneath" woman that she is.
- Plus the fact that the sex between Bet and George in season one wasn't consensual, it was coerced as Peggy pointed out, and we see Bet is obviously triggered by the event when George shows up in her sister's store.
