Original Series

  • Issues #32-#34 and the third annual deal with Henrique Manuel Gallente, a Mutant with a psionic connection to the Darkforce and severe mental health issues that have led to him being ignored or abused. Henrique's inability to control his powers result in them corrupting him and he lashes out by taking control of several people in New York, including superheroes like Silhouette, Namorita, Rage and Black Knight. After Henrique's control over the possessed is broken, Namorita attacks him which prompts protest from Silhouette as this type of treatment is what drove Henrique to villainy in the first place. When Namorita argues that Henrique deserves no mercy from them, Silhouette tearfully points out that a part of her feels gratitude towards Henrique for giving her the ability to walk again while she was possessed.
    • At that moment, Dr. Strange arrives, and using the Eye of Agamotto shows Henrique all the love and hope of the people of New York. Henrique, who has known nothing but hate, abuse and abandonment is moved to tears.

Henrique: Why didn't anyone ever tell me that people cared?

  • The death of Rage's grandmother in issue #37 is utterly heartbreaking, especially since she was the only family he had left. When Rage kills Kimeiko Ashu, the gang leader who caused her death, you realize any child-like innocence he had left is truly gone.
Rage: Oh Lord, please...take me instead...please...take me instead...

  • Issue #39:
    • Rage breaking down in tears at his grandmother's grave. The entire scene has no dialogue or speech bubbles, just Rage crying as Dwayne watches and lets him grieve.
    • Namorita deciding to take a hiatus from the New Warriors due to feeling guilty that Ashu obtained information about the New Warriors' families from her.

  • Issue #43 continues to put poor Vance through the ringer.
    • Vance is finally released from jail after serving out his sentence, only to be met by an angry crowd of mutant haters. When one of them throws the stillborn fetus of a mutant at Vance's feet, he finally snaps and gives a vicious tirade about their racism, as well as venting his anger over his father's abuse.
    • Vance and his mother's relationship has become strained since the trial, with her blaming him for her husband's death and him being angry at her for not protecting him from his father.
    • Remember the woman Vance saved during the second battle with Terrax? Well, it turns out the son she named after Vance has been poisoned by radiation from the battle and now she hates Vance enough to join protesters who are harassing him.

  • Issues #52 and #53 deal with the accidental death of a young boy named Darius at the hands of Darkling. In issue #53, a guilt-ridden Mathemanic uses his Reality Warper powers to trap everyone in the day before the boy died. Darius's spirit eventually confronts Mathemanic and he accepts the Psionex's role in the boy's death.
Mathemanic: I just wanted — I wanted to do something to make up for it.
