    General
  • If Jasper uses Recall to try and remember her past memories, this happens:
Jasper rears back and grins, ready for the next attack.

    Then she stops.

Slowly, her face melts into a look of absolute despair. For reasons even Jasper doesn't understand, she sinks to her knees and begins sobbing.
    Prologue
  • The Drowned, Lapis' corrupted form, is in the shape of a spiky sea urchin, covered in spines to protect herself from anything that will hurt her. Her description says she has "given up on even running from her problems." When Stevonnie confronts her, she appears to be crying, even though she doesn't have a face.
You hear the dripping noise again, and you realize she's crying. Or at least, that's what it looks like: Drops of water are curling down the surface of her gem, seemingly coming from nothing, and falling to the floor.
    • Her mini-monsters are reflections of the despair that has consumed her. The Gulper is described as miserable and deals with its problems by trying to eat everything, "both protecting itself and forcing others to share in its despair." The Shark never stops moving, as if it's running from a perceived threat, and lashes out at anything it encounters. The Urchin, like her, is covered in spikes to protect itself from everything around it, convinced that others will only hurt and betray it.
    • During Lapis' uncorrupting sequence, she reveals how horrible she feels for abandoning Peridot and Steven when she heard the Diamonds were coming to attack Earth.
Lapis: I abandoned you. I said I cared about you, and the life we built on Earth. But when you needed me, I ran. I'm a monster.
(if "But you came back!" is chosen) Only because I convinced myself it was safe, because the diamonds hadn't shown up. Only because I was just as scared running, convinced they would find me. The only reason I even went on the mission was to watch them die. To know I was really free. You see what I mean? I can't do it. I can't be your friend.
(if "That's not your fault" is chosen) It doesn't matter. I still failed. I failed you, I failed Peridot, I failed everyone.
(if "But you'll do better next time" is chosen) No! I won't do better next time! If you believe in me, I'll just let you down again! I'll just keep failing, and running away, and hurting you! Don't believe in me, don't...
  • If you go to Steven's room and rummage around for something useful, you find a beefy sweatband from "Coach Steven". It makes you laugh when you remember when Steven was trying to get strong, but then you think of Pearl, which makes you sad.
  • When going into Jasper's mind to heal her, you see a memory of her fighting on the Strawberry Battlefield that's been mixed up with the memories of Ocean Jasper. Whoever's memory it is, it's a clearly traumatic war memory.
Ocean Jasper: FIGHT THEM! They're coming! They hate us shatter us take us I HAVE TO FIGHT!
Jasper/Ocean Jasper: Fight. Fight! I should have fought I should have stayed if I wasn't such a coward!
Jasper: Fight, don't run fight to the end coward traitor–! My fault, weak weak weak weak WEAK!
  • How Steven feels about his mom when Stevonnie goes to refill their water bottle with Rose's tears at her fountain.
"Thanks, Mom," you mumble, but the words are just a habit, no real gratitude behind them. This whole place feels hollow to you now, just lies and empty promises…
    The Barn

  • The Derelict, Peridot's corrupted form, is in the shape of a roadrunner, behaving in a wild and unsustainable fashion to distract herself from her own misery. She is said "to able to run the length of the Earth a thousand times and still never touch the skies."
    • The message you get if you look around the barn:
You prepare for an attack, but the barn is completely silent. The television is off. Meep-morps – all still intact, thank goodness – lie still around the walls.

The whole place makes you ache with grief. Peridot should be here, chatting your ear off about Camp Pining Hearts. Lapis should be making these meep-morps run. They should both be here, smiling and laughing…

You shake your head to clear it. They will be, soon. You're going to fix this.
  • After gathering all the vegetables from the fields, The Derelict enters the barn, and starts moving them around and frantically tapping at the meep-morps, as if trying to express that the place hasn't been the same since Lapis left.
"…Lapis misses you, too, Peridot," you say.

    She goes completely silent.

You step closer. "We all miss you, Peridot. But it's going to be all right." You lay a hand, cautiously, on her flank, and she lets you.

    "Please come home."

Peridot whirls around at that, making you stagger back from the force. You look up, and… she's crying. The tears spill out from her gem, running over her slick feathers in rivers to fall against the ground.

She opens her mouth and screams a terrible wail, a sound of grief beyond your comprehension. She keeps screaming, the tears still flowing from her head, as the ground below you cracks and bursts with impossible greenery.
  • Peridot's healing sequence begins with her in a deep, dark pit, frantically trying to climb her way out and failing to symbolize that she can't return to Homeworld. She feels that Steven will always see her as a Homeworld Gem and never anything else, and not good enough because she still feels attached to Homeworld despite everything, as it was her home.
"What are you talking about?" you say. "You helped save the Earth! You're not a traitor!"

Peridot barks a bitter laugh. "Oh, so I'm only good because I helped the Earth?" She jumps up, pointing an accusing finger at you. "I knew it! All you care about is Earth! I'll never fit in, I'll never stop being a Homeworld gem, you'll always hate me for caring about anything else!"
    • She also feels guilty because back on Homeworld, she followed orders from Yellow Diamond to do terrible things, including the shattering of newborn Peridots who came out so small and deformed that even limb enhancers couldn't help them.

    The Alpha Kindergarten
  • The Crawler is a representation of how much Amethyst hates herself for being born a runt. It is an ugly humanoid creature that hates its own appearance and attacks anyone who looks at it.

    Endings
  • Garnet refuses to attack corrupted Steven when she realizes the next attack will kill them. She will also break down crying if she uses Future Vision when Steven is at risk of being killed by the next attack. Unless you have fully restored Jasper, there's no way to end the battle except by killing him.
  • Bismuth killing Steven. She tries so hard to avoid lethal attacks, even replacing her basic attack with a weaker version, but in the end she is forced to stab Steven in self-defense, in a mirror of when Steven poofed her in "Bismuth". The only difference, of course, is that Steven doesn't poof... She immediately breaks down, apologizing incoherently while begging Rose and Steven to tell her what to do — this when she is normally so oppositional and certain of her own rightness.
