  • The robots of Granbell all die as their batteries fail right after Shiki leaves with Rebecca and Happy. Made sadder by the fact that they had to spend their last moments together with Shiki lying to him by pretending they were never friends in order to make him leave them, as they knew he would have stayed otherwise and therefore remained alone on their dead planet.
    • Especially Michael, who thinks back on the Demon King's words that all things have a heart, and as he dies he muses that if the pain of loss is so bad, maybe it would be better not to have a heart at all.
    • As seen in the picture, a Freeze-Frame Bonus shows that two robots stopped functioning while hugging each other.
    • Shiki tearfully confessing that despite how it ended, he's still grateful for everything the robots did for him.
  • Foregone happy ending aside, there's the fact that Happy actually died by getting run over by a drunk driver. Not just that, but it all happened in front of Rebecca, who could have been younger than 10 when it happened, holding Happy's body (or at least what's left of it, implying that he was cut in half by the truck) and tearfully begging God to bring him back. It doesn't stop when he's successfully revived in a robotic body, as we see his delicate, metallic endoskeleton with big, glassy eyes trembling over what he's become, fearing that Rebecca would no longer want to be his friend.
  • Pino's B-Cube video that the group find, showing them just how badly Sibir abused her. First he tore off her left leg because she wouldn't dance for him. Then he ordered her to erase all memories of her original master, and when she couldn't, he had one of his men take her away and do it by force. The whole time she was terrified and in tears, begging for help.
  • It turns out that Pino isn't just afraid of what Sibir will do to her if she doesn't do what he says. There are many other androids who have been made to suffer under Sibir's violent whims, and Shiki ends up falling into a room full of their broken bodies. It comes as an extra hard punch to him when the first one he spots is the same model as his friend Michael, and Shiki can't do anything but be there while the android dies.
  • In Hermit's past, the reason why she distrust and hates human so much was because Professor Mueller and the other scientists who lives in Planet Newton are actually a group of machine haters who used her to create a Ether weapon that destroyed the planet Hook filled with robots lifeforms. They don't even care that one of their own, who was a robot scientist was killed in the blast.
  • It is revealed that Valkyrie left Homura was to find the girl's real mother who abandoned her as a child to make money (she had left a note explaining herself, but a cat took it). Sadly, Homura's mother is none other than the cruel and sadistic ruler of Sun Jewel, Kurenai Kogetsu.
  • The reason why neither Valkyrie nor Homura's birth mother came back to her. Kurenai betrayed her promise to Valkyrie and took over the planet with a worse, deadlier rule than the previous ruler. Valkyrie was forced to give a Last Stand, sacrificing herself to save the lives of the other prisoners. Her body remained where it stood all those years later.
  • Chapter 82 and 83: Where to start?! Shiki's crew are captured by Drakken and his gang. What follows is torture of Shiki and his crew, with Drakken sadistically shooting Shiki in the leg for moving and talking back one too many times and then having his crew member slice off Weisz's arm. Oh, and before all this happens, Drakken callously mentions that he sold off Happy and Pino off screen. All Shiki can do is cry pathetically, voicing out loud that this wasn't the adventure that he wanted and how it's not fair that his friends have to be subjected to such cruelty. When Shiki promises to one day defeat and maybe even befriend Drakken, Drakken's response is to murder Shiki by shooting him point blank in the head. Rebecca and Homura's reactions to this horror encompasses readers reactions to this act, since the author essentially killed off the main character. No fanfare. No last minute rescue. Just death. If it wasn't for the fact that readers will be getting more chapters, this would have veered right into a Downer Ending.
  • Chapter 84: Seven days have passed since Shiki's death and Rebecca has lost the ability to feel any emotions except fear, refusing to eat or sleep. She hasn't got over Shiki's death and being separated from her friends. This results in her awakening the full potential power of her Ether Gear, Cat Leaper, and jumping back into the past.
  • Chapter 101: Shiki finally returns to Granbell... And learns the real reason why all the robots attacked him and Rebecca.
  • Chapter 146: Jinn comes across Shiki having somehow survived what looked to be a massive Suicide Attack by Shura's robots. A brief flashback reveals how. Only one of the robots was programmed to blow up. The others, recognizing that Shiki was a good person, sacrificed themselves to save him. Even the robot who exploded shed a tear, lamenting he didn't want to die but couldn't stop himself. What makes it worse is they sounded so resigned about it, figuring they were going to die the next day, while Shiki's whole goal was to stop that from happening.
    • Milani reveals that she thought of Cyca as her grandfather, and was utterly devastated by his cold death at Shura's hands, even if he was a robot. She was so scared that she was unable to say anything.
    • Shiki returns to Edens Zero to find Sister and Hermit both grievously injured, and Witch is revealed to be tied up in Shura's own ship.
  • Chapter 149: After Rebecca is released from Nasseh's hypnosis by Lyra and loses consciousness, she unintentionally mentally time leaps to one of the worst possible futures where her future self not only remains comatose, but also loses both of her legs from some unknown cause and no longer can use her Cat Leaper. This leaves Rebecca completely horrified and confused.
  • Chapter 157, where Shiki and Rebecca are forced to try to kill each other under the influence of Ijuna's Red Destiny influences after Happy cut off the red string attached to them (he thought cutting the string would turn them back to normal). Happy and Pino try to reason with them to get them to stop, but their words don't reach them. As they try to kill each other, Shiki tells Rebecca to drop dead a while Rebecca keeps saying that she hates him as they're both crying. According to Ijuna, the only way for one of them to stop fighting is when one of them ends up dead. If Laguna hadn't arrived in time, one or both of them would have been dead.
  • Chapter 158 reveals Shura's Sexy Secretary Ijuna is the former "Princess" of the Resistance who was believed to have been killed. In reality, she went alone on a rescue mission and was captured: becoming the personal plaything of Shura, Ijuna was tortured physically and psychologically by him. Eventually she broke and began to fall for him believing him to be a tortured soul who is who he is because he has never been loved and thus never loved anyone else. Laguna outright tells her that she's brainwashed herself into serving a monster and betrayed everything that she once stood for.
    • Laguna confirms here that he left Oasis not because he became disillusioned with the groups' goal to overthrow The Empire, but because he believed they weren't strong enough to do so. He chose to leave the Aoi Cosmos and joined Draken's forces to gain the strength to achieve his goal of avenging the best friend who was killed. Laguna states he would willingly join and become the scum of the universe if it means bringing down Nero's rule.
    • ...And just as Ijuna is saying what a misunderstood man Shura is, Shiki and his group finally find the Jerkass and discovers that he got bored and has apparently killed Witch while "having fun."
  • In the previous arcs, Shiki vows to never take a life of humans or robots since life is precious and it shouldn't be taken away. At the end of Chapter 160, Shiki declares those lights (living beings) won't go away without Shura around. Due to the deaths of all robots and Witch's torture, both was caused by Shura, filled with grief and anger, Shiki is out for blood and the first person he wants to kill is Shura, instead of defeating him like the other enemies he encountered. Shiki believes killing Shura will end the war and save many lives.
  • Chapter 160: Two members of Oasis are killed by a disintegration beam, with the female member Furena giving a Sorry That I'm Dying apology to her boyfriend.
    • Creed gets shot in cold blood by Jesse, a member of his own team. He attempts to stammer out a Dying Declaration of Love to Homura but collapses before he can finish.
  • Chapter 161: When Weisz finds Homura kneeling next to Creed's lifeless body and asks who it was, Homura replies that he was "A friend from home" before performing a Due to the Dead by closing Creed's eyes and placing his glasses back.
  • Chapter 166: Witch creates a shield to protect the Edens Zero ship and the crew from a massive explosion that destroys an entire planet. However, she needs to be exposed directly to the explosion and ends up disintegrating.
    • She gives the crew that she considers her family a last "I love you" before she disintegrates as a result of protecting them from an explosion.
  • Chapter 167: The whole chapter is about the crew of the Edens Zero grieving over Witch's death a few days later. Sister and Hermit still can't really come to terms with it. Shiki has been holed up in his quarters the entire time without eating. Rebecca seems to be holding it together when she goes to visit Shiki and encourage him to take better care of himself, but it's then revealed that she's been trying and failing to use her Cat Leaper powers to undo Witch's death for the last two days, and the entire left side of her body is covered in cracks.
    • Though Laguna seems unflappable in the aftermath of Witch's death, wondering how long the crew are going to spend grieving over her, his calm facade is broken when Weisz dissolves his vow to kill Laguna if anything happened to a member of the Edens Zero, acknowledging that Laguna must have lost people he cared about in the battle too. Laguna's thoughts go back to Ijuna, and his face as Weisz leaves shows how true this is.
  • Chapter 168:
    • It's revealed Edens Zero sent Creed body back to the Interstellar Army to be buried. While undermined by Justice's usual Black-and-White Insanity and Jesse passing the blame onto Edens Zero for Creed's death, it's still a touching gesture on their part.
    • The chapter ends with Edens Zero as well as the resistance honoring their dead with a lamp festival, with Shiki promising to Witch that they'll never forget her.
  • Chapter 186: When the Four Dark Stars pull Shiki and his team into different pocket dimensions to fight one-on-one, the world that Wizard pulls Shiki into is a copy of Granbell. In this realm, all of Granbell's robots and even Witch seem to be alive. And while the illusion doesn't fool him and he's able to fight back when Wizard tries to get him to drop his guard, it's clear that this reminder of everyone he's lost hurts Shiki deeply.
  • Chapter 204: The aftermath of Shiki, now Ziggy, waking up 20,000 years in the future. He's scared and confused, trapped in a cold mechanical body. His one beacon of hope is Rebecca, who he knows will still accept him even if he has become a android. That hope is turned into despair when he's shown her corpse hanging from wires being used for ether experiments. Even decades later when Ziggy no longer has any memory of his time as Shiki, he still looks on Rebecca's body and wishes she were alive.
  • Chapter 213, Shiki’s hesitation to end Ziggy as a mercy kill results in Pino’s death. Shiki screams in despair over one of his best friends’ death, his overdrive completely changed, and takes his anger out of Ziggy and prepares to kill him.
    • Pino has already accepted her death by Ziggy, her parting words to Shiki are that if she ever gains a second life, she wants to become human before Ziggy uses his ether gear to crush her out of her existence.
