Tear Jerker / Dragon Ball FighterZ

Go To

  • This game features the last known performance of Hiromi Tsuru as Bulma, who passed away a few months prior to the game's release.
  • In story mode, the fact Android 16 dies in every campaign by Android 21 in an attack of madness. It doesn't help that 21 is technically his mother.
    • In a case of The Ending Changes Everything, looking back at the first route after knowing the situation more from the Android route; in the scene where 16 interacts with 21, it's clear that the evil 21 has taken control of her body, and is essentially holding the true 21 hostage in her own mind in order to blackmail 16. She then decides to just kill 16, who doesn't even attempt to save himself.
    • In Frieza's campaign, on confronting 16 this time, she appears to go into spasm, prompting 16 to go over to her out of concern, which she then reveals was just a ploy to kill him. She was faking her true personality Fighting from the Inside just to mess with 16. Even Frieza is disturbed by this. Poor guy.
    • This is especially heartbreaking during the Android campaign as rather than sheer madness, she attacks 16 in a fit of hunger-induced rage. When 17 calls 21 out on that, she immediately realizes what she has done and lets out a Big "NO!", which results in a much darker turn for the story as her evil side becomes an Enemy Without.
  • Android 21's Heroic Sacrifice: all she wanted was to live peacefully with Android 16, but her Horror Hunger ruined everything as it gradually grew further and further out of her control, and while she splits from her darker impulses, she's still a danger to the others and knows it, so she removes herself from the equation entirely. Making certain she and her evil counterpart are both caught up in the blast of Goku's spirit bomb.
Android 21: We're going to disappear together!
  • Android 21 mentions that she feels like crying when talking about her creator, but doesn't know why, because she knows from what she's heard about him after being activated that he wasn't a particularly nice person. As she's the mother of Dr. Gero's son, whom Android 16 was based off of, and likely therefore Gero's widow, it makes sense that some part of her expresses sorrow over his death even though she doesn't remember. For all his evil, Gero did genuinely seem to care about his family.
  • Android 21's last link event has her expressing how interacting with the Earthling soul and watched them grow, to get the Z Fighters to where they are, has filled her with hope, and that she's happy to be part of that, and thanks them for their aid. This, coupled with her expressing her dreams in earlier events, to find a way to control her hunger, prevent herself from going berserk, to find out more about why she was created and to utilize the cellular technology used in her creation in order to help mankind, all become huge tearjerkers come the final battle, where she decides she's too dangerous to continue living, and sacrifices herself.
    • This is all made worse when you consider how short her life has been. Yes, there's her history as a human, but she doesn't remember that. She counts her age since her activation, and so considers herself to be younger than ten despite being an adult in mind and body (as she has Buu's cells, this actually makes her less than five). 21's existence is a very short and tragic one.
  • The two endings where you kill 21 before we can find out who she truly is can be this, in a way. Somewhere down there, she still was struggling with her inner demons, but didn't have a chance to split from it and make friends with the Z-Fighters. Then again, one could also see this as a Mercy Kill, because she still ended up at the mercy of her evil half anyway (both the actual one and her inner demons) and then decided to sacrifice herself even so she won't be a threat, so at least she didn't have to go through that part.
  • Outside of story, with Master Roshi as a new fighter, we get to see his interactions to several many people. Against Goku Black/Zamasu and Hit? You can hear the venom in his voice as he interacts with them.
Master Roshi: How dare you misuse the body of one of my students?!
    • Jiren is normally The Stoic, but his unique win quote with Master Roshi on his team reminds us that underneath his facade of an aloof jerk who abandoned trust in others and sought solace in power is a deeply hurt man who lost everyone he ever loved, including his own teacher. And as he says this line, you can clearly hear him start to break down and almost cry.
Jiren: I, too, once had a master I respected. If only...I had more power then...!
    • Even harsher is that Jiren's quote above serves as a stark contrast to Goku Black's win quote with Roshi on his team, where he instead throws shade towards his dead master Gowasu for not agreeing with his hatred of mortals Before he knew of Goku, Zamasu was a pure-hearted Kai who revered his master, despite growing to look down upon mortals. It really leaves one to wonder what could have been, if everything didn't go so wrong.
Goku Black: I, too, once had a master, but he was a damned fool. For your sake, I hope you do not share his shortcomings.
