Tear Jerker / Danganronpa: In Harmony's Wake

Go To

  • Almost right off the bat, Sunset is accused of being the traitor in the group because she has knowledge of Danganronpa from playing the games herself. Luckily enough people decide to side with her for the time being.
  • Wallflower's entire attitude can be one. The whole cast is suffering from Laser-Guided Amnesia, as is usual for participants in the Killing Game. While everyone had their memories of each other from high school erased, forgetting they ever met before now, they mostly keep their normal personalities. Wallflower however is much more abrasive and rude than she ever was in canon, going out of her way to insult everyone when given the chance and saying it is only a matter of time until someone dies, because to her knowledge now she never made any friends in high school, and thus believes she grew up ignored by everyone and became bitter because of it.
  • Pinkie Pie sets up a party for everyone to help raise their spirits and prevent a murder from occurring. It seems like the party was mostly a success, until the next morning when it is revealed that Wallflower Blush, the only passenger not present at the party, was murdered at some point the previous night, with the murderer using the party as a distraction to carryout the deed.
  • Sci-Twi clearly does not enjoy Monoponi blatantly revealing her and Flash's sex life. When Flash needs to restrain her to keep her from attacking Monoponi, she eventually breaks down into tears in his arms out of embarrassment.
  • After Timber Spruce is cornered at revealed to be the culprit of the first trial, he breaks down and reveals he did it because he needed to escape and find out if his sister Gloriosa Daisy is okay, since the last thing he remembers about her was how they were in debt and couldn't pay it off to keep their land. Monoponi twists the knife further by revealing he had the perfect chance for Revenge by Proxy, by murdering Diamond Tiara, the daughter of Filthy Rich, but wasted it by murdering a nobody like Wallflower instead. Timber spends his last moments chasing Diamond around the courtroom, begging her to tell him about his sister, while she insists she doesn't know. Even as Timber is wrapped in chains and literally dragged to his execution, his sister is still the only thing on his mind.
    Timber: GLORIOSAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
  • The first Interlude chapter reveals that the Killing Game is being shown to Princess Twilight Sparkle, and she is horrified to watch her friends die and forced to kill each other.
  • Sunset finds a photo of her, Trixie, and Wallflower happy together, and reality starts to set in on how the three of them knew each other before the Killing Game and were friends.
  • Adagio is clearly struggling with her feelings and relationship with Sunset. When Sunset becomes friends with Trixie, Adagio instantly assumes she is being replaced and lashes out at Sunset with insults and threats. When Sunset goes to her room to try to talk to her about it, Adagio ends up pinning her and threatening her with a knife before Sunset manages to tell her she and Trixie are Just Friends.
  • Sunset receives Trixie's secret, revealing that Trixie had a Disappeared Dad, abandoned by him but still considering him her hero.
  • Apple Bloom's death. Not only was she Impaled with Extreme Prejudice, it happens in front of everyone since she was on stage. Applejack is reduced to sobbing as she cradles her little sister, begging her not to die.
  • The other reactions to Apple Bloom's death aren't much better.
    • Sunset realizes that Apple Bloom saved her life by shoving her out of the way, leaving her with a massive case of Survivor's Guilt during the investigation.
    • Rarity is left sobbing and clinging tightly on to Sweetie Belle in what is essentially a chokehold, whispering how she is glad that it wasn't Sweetie Belle. This ends up being much Harsher in Hindsight when it is revealed that Sweetie was the one who setup the Death Trap that killed Apple Bloom, resulting in Sweetie suffering an even more gruesome death.
  • When Sweetie is revealed to be the culprit of the second trial, Rarity can only say she is disappointed in her for what she has done. Her biggest fear in the game was that she couldn't protect her and that someone would murder her, but Sweetie did something much worse by murdering someone herself. Despite this though, Rarity still begs for her sister's life, asking to take her place in the execution.
  • The second Interlude chapter confirms that Gloriosa is just fine. While this would normally be good news, it unfortunately means that Wallflower and Timber died for absolutely no reason. Also, when Princess Twilight is discussing the situation with Principal Celestia and Vice-Principal Luna, they mention they need to know the details of how everyone died, so they can properly inform their families about their passing.
  • Fluttershy's crying and fear in the face of death is especially horrible considering just a few hours prior she'd told Sunset that We All Die Someday. She declared that death wasn't as scary as some people made it out to be, only to be terrified to the point of endless tears when she was cuffed by Monoponi and subsequently executed. The fact that her death was quick was the only mercy granted.
    • Rainbow Dash's heartbreak in the aftermath inadvertently resulted in Pinkie Pie's death too, albeit indirectly.
  • Pinkie's entire downward spiral after Fluttershy's death, where it becomes more and more clear that the normally energetic and Fun Personified Pinkie has had a Descent into Addiction just to cope with the Killing Game.
  • Sci-Twi reveals she got Adagio's secret, and she knows that she has killed before. When Sunset tells Adagio what Sci-Twi told her, Adagio admits it is true, but it was an accident she and her sisters caused. They tried to feed off the hatred of three homeless men, so they manipulated them into arguing with each other, but they underestimated how much the three men really hated each other and it quickly escalated into a violent fight, with one of the men being beaten to death. It is clear even Adagio was traumatized by this.
  • Not long after it is revealed during the trial that Applejack and Rarity were married to each other, they take opposite sides in a debate on whether Diamond Tiara is guilty of the murders or not. To put it simply, their friendship does not come out in tact afterwards. The two are clearly on bitter terms for the rest of the trial, throwing insults at each other, and Applejack at one point even saying she can't believe she was ever married to Rarity, after spitting at her.
  • During the trial, Sunset has to go back and forth with Twilight to convince her to give up and admit what she's done. It takes Flash Sentry, her boyfriend, to finally seal the deal, and in the process, her fate.
  • Rainbow Dash is so convinced she's responsible for Pinkie's death that she breaks down in tears, multiple times, during the trial, and is so scared by the prospect of dying that she does everything she can to deny it.
    • Except it wasn't even her fault. It was Trixie's. The way Sunset reacts to this reveal is utterly heartbreaking, because she yells at Trixie so much that she declares, in her mind, that Trixie is no longer her friend.
  • Monoponi forces the group to vote on which blackened gets executed, and deliberately fools them into voting for Trixie so he can execute Twilight instead. Everyone's reactions upon this switcheroo hurts, but what hurts worse is the way they treat Trixie afterwards, especially when he takes her leg. No one helps her, several people say she deserved worse, and in the elevator ride back, Sunset even slaps Trixie in the face.
    • One of the worst reactions to this big switch comes from Flash Sentry. Upon it being declared that Twilight is the one being executed, he barrels toward her and holds on to her, with her trying to comfort him that he did the right thing by standing up to her during the trial. The two have just enough time to say they love each other and share a Last Kiss together before Twilight is dragged away in chains, and even then Sunset needs to leap onto Flash to prevent him from being dragged along with Twilight. The poor guy is left in a crying mess after watching his girlfriend's execution, and all Sunset can do to comfort him is hold on to him and cry with him.
  • In the third Interlude, Princess Twilight and Detective Shining Armor learn about the third trial, and the execution of Sci-Twi. Neither of them take it very well, from Shining Armor trying to cope with the realization that his little sister is dead, to Princess Twilight dealing with the shock of her counterpart dying. This even leads to Princess Twilight momentarily taking her fury out on the pony version of Trixie, and needing to be restrained before she ends up killing her.
    • What makes this even worse is that, due to her broken hairband and missing glasses, Sci-Twi looked exactly like how Princess Twi used to look in the EQG universe, to the point that Princess Twi thought it WAS herself. This messed with her head something fierce.
  • Trixie receives no sympathy from the others in part one or two of Chapter Four. The group vote to lock her away, and Trixie accepts it as her due fate, saying she deserves it.
  • Scootaloo is utterly heartbroken over Rainbow Dash's death, though she tries not to show it. Her tough girl act is easily seen through however, showing how vulnerable she really is inside.
  • Flash Sentry's death came as such a shock to Sunset, she broke down when shouting at Monoponi and almost punched him in the face. Adagio stopped her at the last second, but if she hadn't, Sunset would've been executed.
  • Rainbow Dash cared about Flash Sentry as a friend, and wanted to do right by him. She knew he was sick, and got him medicine to help him feel better. But the medicine not only gave him a nasty seizure, it convinced him she was trying to murder him. So he murdered her, all because she committed the crime of caring too much about him.
  • Throughout the entire story, Adagio and Sunset become closer and closer, while Adagio becomes a nicer person all the while. It seems as if she's on the path to true redemption. And then Diamond Tiara finds a photo album showcasing the events of Rainbow Rocks, and Adagio feels so betrayed by Sunset that she kicks Sunset hard enough to crack two ribs, destroys all of Sunset's clothes and Sunset's guitar, trashes Sunset's bathroom, and later on tosses Sunset into the deep end of the pool.
  • This then culminates in Adagio attempting to murder Sunset by locking her away in the archive room so she'd die of dehydration, leading to a jump cut and Trixie taking over as protagonist for the rest of Chapter Five.
  • During the end of the first part of the Chapter Five trial, Trixie witnesses a lighted display monitoring Sunset's lifesigns dim and then fade out entirely. This leads into the whole of the second part, where she and everyone else, Monoponi included, are convinced Sunset had died, complete with the author making a death portrait for Sunset.
  • Sunset, upon being confronted with her mistake regarding the spare key she'd given Adagio, goes on a long rant about how much her actions in Rainbow Rocks resulted in hurting Adagio, and how she wished she could've done something, anything to help Adagio not feel betrayed. Then she breaks down crying, hard, and no one is allowed to comfort her because Monoponi prevents it. This leads to Trixie crying as well... and her admission that she was the one who killed Adagio.
  • Sunset has a complete breakdown when confronted by the idea that her best friend murdered her lover. She's even the subject of the Argument Armament of Chapter Five, because Trixie is forced to prove her own guilt to Sunset.
