Spoilers Off applies to the Moments subpages. BEWARE OF UNMARKED SPOILERS

  • Edith losing both her parents, especially the moment where she must identify her father's grotesquely disfigured body. Or the visitation from her mother's ghost where the spirit's actual actions belie its terrifying appearance — not only trying to give a warning, albeit an ominous one, but she seems to be trying to embrace her young daughter one last time.
  • Similarly Edith saying goodbye to Thomas' ghost.
  • Lucille's utterly broken reaction to said ghost rates a mention, too. It's the only hint of remorse she shows for her actions in the whole movie.
  • Edith and Thomas' confrontation in front of the elevator. Edith lists all the things Thomas has done against her and he says "I did" to each one, until she says "You told me you loved me!" to which he responds "I do!". The anguish and sincerity in his voice is painfully heartbreaking.
  • When Edith has to identify her father's body, she breaks down in tears and gets upset when other people try to move the corpse around, sobbing for them not to touch him.
  • The wax cylinder Edith finds that Thomas' first wife Pamela made shortly before succumbing to the poison. She's clearly terrified and sobbing over what the siblings have done to her, and tearfully begs whoever finds the recording to take her body back home because she doesn't want to die alone in the house.
  • Edith slapping Thomas across the face after he publicly breaks her heart on her father's orders. Made even worse by the revelation that Thomas is a survivor of severe physical abuse as a child and is still being emotionally abused by Lucille, and every person in his life who's ever actually "loved" him (his parents, his sister, and now Edith) has hurt him.
  • Thomas trying so earnestly to talk Lucille into coming away with him and Edith so they can be free of their traumatic past- and her absolute despair after realizing she's killed him. Even with the deeply messed-up nature of their relationship, each of them is the only person who's ever truly loved the other (knowing exactly who and what they are). And even that fails them in the end.
