Tear Jerker / Code Geass: Paladins of Voltron

Go To

As is the case with all pages detailing Tear Jerkering Moments, Spoilers Off!

  • The reaction of various characters on Earth have when learning that their friends and family are missing when the Paladins' disappearance is reported.
    • Especially Euphie, Cornelia, and Jeremiah's reactions - they just learned that people they had assumed to be dead for seven years are still alive but are now missing.
  • C.C.'s state of terror when she has her memories examined by Haggar. Hardly anything seems to phase her, but this did, and it is heartbreaking.
  • Kallen's desperation to get in touch with the others when Lelouch is injured during Across The Universe - she's already lost her brother, had to see her mother imprisoned, and now has to face the possibility of losing her leader and probable crush. The poor girl is clearly under a lot of stress.
  • Practically all of the Paladins' reactions to meeting Mao - he gives each of them a "The Reason You Suck" Speech, each tailored to the Paladin he is addressing:
    • When capturing Allura, he claims that for all that she hates Zarkon and Charles, she's not so different from them, in part because despite genuinely wanting to free the universe from the Galra Empire, she's perfectly willing to commit total genocide on the Galra and wipe them out like the Galra did to her people to do so. She doesn't take it well.
    • For Milly, he calls her out on how she and her family only took Lelouch and Nunnally in if they were found by the Emperor and told that the Ashfords cared for the two, the family might regain their lost status.
    • For Rivalz, he mocks the boy's total unwillingness to do anything to help others despite regularly driving past the ghettoes with Lelouch.
    • For Kallen, Mao throws out the fact that Kallen hates her mother for bearing so much abuse from Ms. Stadfelt and being imprisoned (though this only serves to piss her off).
    • Shirley, meanwhile, has to put up with Mao noting that the Emperor might have her parents either taken hostage or assassinated if he found out she was a Paladin. Mao also mocks her for crushing hard on Lelouch despite his more negative traits, and for the fact that she now has feelings for Rai as well.
    • Speaking of Rai, he has to deal with Mao berating him over how severely he hurt his sister in his effort to keep her away from the gladiator matches. Additionally, Mao notes that Rai is still trying to regain his memories...but isn't sure that he wants to get them back.
    • Suzaku...actually, Suzaku found a way to shut Mao up.
    • Finally, Lelouch arguably gets it the worst - while the prince makes an effort to shoot down all of Mao's criticisms, he finally cracks when the Chinese Boy asks him if he really thinks he'll be able to bond with the Black Lion, or if he is any different from Zarkon.
  • With Mao's new Geass, if he can see someone's face, he can see that person's worst nightmare and make it appear to the person in question. He uses it on several of the Paladins as well:
    • Rai apparently revisits his time as a Galra prisoner.
    • Shirley sees her parents leaving her.
    • Milly revisits a time she talked to her mother.
    • After Mao reveals that he killed his father, Suzaku sees himself standing over Allura's body, the corpses of the other Paladins nearby, dressed in a Galra soldier uniform with Zarkon congratulating him.
    • Kallen sees her brother being gunned down in the Shinjuku Square.
  • Shirley of all people is the one who ends up killing Mao, but it clearly takes a toll on her emotionally.
  • Suzaku's 10-Minute Retirement due to his shame over killing his father. Even though all of the Paladins, including Kallen, the one who has the most reason to hate him for killing his dad, beg him not to go, he's too ashamed of himself to listen.
    • A special mention has to go to Nunnally failing to run after him on her newly restored legs and begging him to stay. Suzaku hurries into his pod in tears.
    • The description of Yoru after he leaves, it flat out says that if she could, she would be crying non-stop.
  • Rai's mother Erina was disowned by her family and kicked out when they discovered her affair with Charles.
  • Euphemia is shot by Rolo, who then attempts to shoot Nunnally before the Lions chase him off, and Suzaku barely manages to get her to a cryopod in time.
  • Nunnally, unfortunately, gets a good look at the destruction left by the Galra. She's left crying in her brother's arms after witnessing the devastation.
  • Coran looking over a cryopod containing a child shot multiple times, noting that the nerve damage might render their arm permanently useless even if they recover.
    • It's also noted that even with the Castle's cryopods, medical droids, and assistance from human doctors, the Paladins and their allies aren't able to save everyone.
  • Suzaku’s Heroic BSoD after Euphie is shot. He keeps himself composed until just a few hours before the Black Rebellion, where he promptly breaks down and cries, tearing up a wall with his bayard as he does so, then smashing it with his fists, before finally just collapsing in grief. When C.C. speaks with him afterwards, he finally admits he didn’t actually believe he could change Britannia from within when he joined the military and just wanted to find a way to die and atone for killing his father.
  • V.V. tormenting Allura with visions of Altea's destruction when she tries to stop him from taking C.C.
  • Despite all of their efforts to unite Earth, the Paladins have to leave the planet in defeat when Zarkon arrives and personally crushes the Black Rebellion.
  • Rivalz's father only wanted one male heir, to avoid the "hassle" of splitting the inheritance. When his second son Joshua was born, Rivalz's mother having hidden the gender from him, he just looked at Josh with disgust, and his wife later fled to her family with her children because she found out that he planned to have Joshua "kidnapped", not even caring or wanting to know his destination as long as he got rid of him.
  • Shirley's conversation with her parents. Unlike the rest of the Paladins' families, they don't have any idea how to take her choice of actions.
  • After their Battle in the Center of the Mind against Zarkon, Lelouch is briefly depressed, wondering if he really would have been better than Zarkon if he had been in the latter's role.
  • At the end of her test to join the Blade of Marmora, Nunnally tearfully admits her motives for pushing herself as she has been: in spite of what everyone else tells her, she still feels like a useless burden, and hates herself for it. Lelouch is moved to tears as he discovers what his sister's been feeling.
  • In this story we actually get some backstory for Lotor's generals, and they're all rather depressing, as you could probably expect.
  • Nina reveals to Lotor that she tried to head to the Special Administrative Zone when the Paladins revealed that they were her friends. But then the Galra arrived, and seemingly killed Euphemia, causing her to go into hiding, which saw her be left behind when the Voltron Coalition fled from Earth.
