     The Ordeal

  • When Ashley is going through Miles's stuff and finds the engagement ring that he was going to give her. Unsurprisingly, she starts sobbing, especially considering that she only found out about it after he got arrested.

     Smashley Rose

  • The entire aftermath of Miles's sentencing. It's clear that nobody involved was expecting him to get five years, and the shock is palpable.
    • Rainey and Trish hug each other outside the courthouse, the latter clearly trying not to cry.
    • Both Rainey and Ashley wondering how to tell Sean that his father is in prison, especially since Miles had previously told Sean that prison was "hell" in order to make sure he behaves.
  • Ashley's entire "I hate the rich" speech.

     The Rule of Three

  • At this point, it's become clear that Miles is having a rough time of it in prison.
    • When Ashley comes to visit, Miles asks her if she has told Sean where he is. When she says no, he becomes uncharacteristically somber, and says that while he definitely understands why she hasn't, he misses him.
    • Later in the scene, she tries to reassure Miles by saying that it's unlikely that he'll serve his full sentence, to which he quietly asks if they can change the subject.

     The Four Hustlateers

  • Rainey admits to Ashley that while she tries not to tell him during their visits, she is furious at Miles, and she asks Ashley why she is not. From the look on Ashley's face, it's clear that there is something more that's being unsaid, and Rainey tries to gently coax it out of her at several points in the episode, but Ashley does not yet feel comfortable enough to voice it.

     Beaches Be Trippin'

  • This episode manages one in the Previously on…, when Miles mentions that Ashley still hasn't told Sean where he is, and that he hopes she will tell him soon. It's clear that Miles misses his son very much, but he also wants Sean to know that he didn't leave him. Rafael Casal's delivery is absolutely heartbreaking.
  • At the beginning of the episode proper, Ashley has an argument with her Imaginary Friend version of Miles, convinced that he hates her for not telling Sean where he is, even though (real) Miles has not said or done anything to indicate that. Ashley is so upset that she bails on their visitation, and later, when she is on the beach, she breaks down in tears, confessing that she has no idea how to handle the situation and fears that her family will be broken apart.
  • During the Disney Acid Sequence, when Janelle is pulling various items out of a suitcase, she pulls out an enlarged version of the engagement ring that Miles was going to give to Ashley. The scene is largely comedic, but Ashley quietly takes the ring and puts it away.

     Ghost Dad

  • In the middle of the debate on colourism and the black experience, Janelle mentions that when they were in school, many people would talk about how pretty (light-skinned) Ashley was, while telling Janelle (who's darker-skinned) that she should get her hair straightened. The moment goes by quickly, but you can see that there is real pain in Janelle's eyes and that it's clearly a touchy subject for her.
  • Much of Ashley and Imaginary Miles's conversation on the mountain is this (when it's not incredibly sweet), but especially when she simply tells Miles that she misses him, and that he's "her person".
    • Ashley's guilt also comes to a head during this conversation, and she tells Miles that she's sure he must hate her for his circumstances, since the only reason he's in jail is because he "did her a favour." Miles calls out the guilt for what it is and reassures Ashley that he's a grown man who is capable of making his own choices, stating further that she doesn't owe him anything.
  • At the end of the episode, Ashley steels herself to finally tell Sean where Miles is. When the two of them arrive home, interpretive dancers dressed as prisoners (likely representatives of incarcerated men who have been separated from their children) line the streets and the halls of the house, and they sit on the floor of the bedroom when Ashley finally breaks the news, listening to her read Sean a bedtime story.

     Seannie Darko

  • At the beginning of the episode, Ashley takes Sean to visit Miles. While Sean is clearly happy to see his dad (and vice versa), he still doesn't quite understand what Miles being in jail means, and the visitation ends badly when another prisoner gets in a loud fight with his girlfriend. Sean (usually a Cheerful Child) is clearly upset by the experience, and everyone tries desperately to cheer him up, which doesn't work until the end of the episode.
  • Earl confesses to Ashley that he still holds a lot of trauma about his arrest and incarceration, especially considering how he was dragged out in cuffs in the middle of his parents' restaurant.

     Bride or Die

  • When she's sitting in the waiting room with Janelle, Ashley confesses that she and Miles had talked about marriage many times before, but never went through with it due to life circumstances (such as Sean's birth and Ashley's mother's death) and wanting to save money to "do it the movie way". As happy as Ashley is to get married, her feelings are also bittersweet, since she admits to Janelle that this was not the way she pictured her wedding day.
    • This discussion also prompts a heartbreaking revelation from Janelle. Namely, that she was married during the time she was in Bali, even being stepmother to a young child, but that her marriage didn't work out, which is implied to be the reason she returned to Oakland. Janelle doesn't elaborate on why her marriage ended, only saying that she was more invested than her husband was.
  • Earl is clearly enjoying himself on his first day of working on the boat, but things become more troubling when his superior tells him that he's going to have to work late. Earl protests, given his ankle monitor, but the man says that "the port office will take care of it." This proves to not be the case, since the light on Earl's monitor turns red at the end of his shift. He tries and fails to contact his parole officer, only getting his voicemail, and even when he gets home, the light on his monitor is still red. Earl is completely crushed, and inevitably, he is re-arrested.
  • At the end of the episode, the rest of the characters learn about Earl's re-arrest when they get back from the wedding and see his extension cord lying in the middle of the street. Janelle is panicked and upset, and asks her mother what happened, to which Nancy has no good answer. In the final moments of the episode, they read the note that Earl left earlier in the episode, which simply says "Tell Ashley congratulations" and includes his recipe for curry chicken. Just before the credits roll, Ashley solemnly notes that it had only been a month since Earl's release.
