Aqua Regia is full of references and homages as plain Author Appeal due the fact that Fluhor is One of Us, here's a list:
open/close all folders
Episode names
- Most episodes are named after songs, always rock related, with some exceptions. And to drive the point further they're called "tracks" instead of chapters/episodes:
- The first one is "Leather Rebel", and while it opens with a flashback, subsequently Daniel wakes up with a trippy background, let's say that if Deep Cover played on the background, it wouldn't feel out of place.
- The second episode is called "Blood and Thunder", also inmediately follows the previous song due the fact these are the lyrics of it:"Hero of the night. Blood and thunder rushing through me."
- The third one is called "The girl in a black dress" which is a song by Synthwave icon, Perturbator.
- The fourth one is called "Hellion" and the artwork references the debut album of Thirty Seconds to Mars.
- The fifth one is called "Suicide Blond
- The sixth one is called "Unease", but it's not based in any particular song, however it references The Plasmatics, with a punk rocker being fully nude.
- The seventh one is called "Out in the cold" and the artwork is a reference to Lacuna Coil's album "Karmacode".
- The eight one is called "Sleeping with ghosts and the artwork is drawn in the same spirit as the album cover.
- The ninth chapter is called "Le Perv"
- The tenth one is called "Thunderstruck"
- The eleventh one is called "Demolition Lovers"
Anime and Manga
- A Cyberpunk with a dictatorship in a Closed Circle? AKIRA influenced a lot of Cyberpunk works, after all...
- One of the stores Daniel passes by is called La Pucelle, which has mannequins posing a la Jojo's characters.
- The chained arrow that appears at the end of each episode is a Heavy Metal take on the iconic "To be continued" of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise.
- The reasons why the characters look and are designed is stated in the Bonus Track #1, for example:
- Why does Daniel has a huge black revolver? Well, because of Trigun, of course!
- Ditto for his X shaped scar,it's explicitly a Shout-Out to Rurouni Kenshin
- Rouge looks like a fusion between Satsuki and Ryuko with Integra Hellsing wit.
- Anahí's appearance is based on Casca and Lucía.
Music
- Daniel's appearance in the flashback, with his spiky blond hair and leather clothing, is based partially in Billy Idol. Fluhor proclaimed himself an unabashed fan.
- His more Pretty Boy looks are closer to model, Lucky Blue Smith, on the other hand.
- Anahí's surname, is a homage to Dolores O'Riordan.
- Her appearance looks an awful lot like a combination between Tina Bell from proto-Grunge band, "Bam Bam", and Fantasy Soul musician, "QUIN".
- Julio Sosa, that's all.
- In one of the bonus comics, they mention Punk Rock bands such as "Black Flag", "The Violators", and of course, Judas Priest, which Anahí Lampshades:
- "If you're gonna flirt with me, using metal as an excuse it's not the best idea, say you like Black Flag, The Violators, use punk, at least".
- Cesar, the cyborg that turns into a monster has an uncanny resemblance to a young Jonathan Davis with the dreads and 90s Perma-Stubble.
Video Games
- In the old afterwords, Fluhor stated that his main inspirations were Guilty Gear, Final Fantasy VII and Berserk
- Episode three has a quote based one:
- "Kept you waiting, huh?"
- Which is parodied in the Bonus Track, having him cosplayed as Solid Snake, except he's called Yarará note
- Daniel's katana in the cover have wires and lightning, similar to the High-frequency blades ones from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
