Alter Ego is a singing competition airing on Fox, hosted by Rocsi Diaz and judged by will.i.am, Alanis Morissette, Grimes, and Nick Lachey.

Similar to The Masked Singer, the contestants perform in disguise as their alter egos, which, in this case, are computer generated and projected onto a stage, and each episode, one contestant is unmasked and sent home. Unlike Masked Singer, though, the audience at home knows who each of the contestants are from the beginning, while the judges and audience in the studio have no idea. The contestants are also not celebrities; some are not even professional singers. The idea is that the show gives a chance to singers who would not have a chance in the spotlight under normal circumstances.

This series contains examples of:

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Most of the alter egos favor brightly-colored skin.
  • Ambiguous Gender: It's not clear whether Seven is supposed to be seen as male or female.
  • Against My Religion:
    • Kingston Sol is a pastor who takes advantage of his anonymity on the show to perform sultrier fare than he usually gets to sing in choir.
    • Night Journey is a Hijabi Muslim who adopted an alter ego because she's not normally encouraged to sing in her community.
  • Big Fun:
    • Kingston Sol is a large fellow with a Hawaiian aesthetic. His real self is also pretty husky.
    • While Wolfgang Champagne is svelte, his real self is hefty.
  • Big "WHAT?!": The Judges remarks when they found out the performer behind Neveah King is a man after Neveah loses to Safara in the first Head-To-Head round.
  • Catchphrase: Will.i.am is fond of shouting "What the what the ''what?!"
  • Disappears into Light: What happens to each alter ego after their final performance.
  • The Diva:
    • The Dawn Majesty insists on being called The Dawn Majesty.
    • Nevaeh King is very obviously patterned on divas like Whitney Houston.
    • St. Luna channels Amy Winehouse.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Fern's human performer, Mia, while speaking lets out a mouse-like squeak — before Mia tells us that she has Tourette's Syndrome — and one of her speaking symptoms is squeaking.
  • Fish People: This is Siren's appearance.
  • Flaming Hair:
    • Bernie Burns has a fiery pompadour.
    • Kai has a laser mohawk.
    • Phoenix Embers, as her name suggests, has a flame for hair. It also changes color.
  • Happily Married: Orlando Deville has a wife back home who encouraged him to go on the show.
  • Hollywood Tourette's: Fern has Tourette's syndrome, but this manifests itself as physical tics rather than the stereotypical compulsive cursing.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Wolfgang Champagne's first name is an obvious reference to his being a werewolf.
    • Kingston Sol chose his surname because it means "sun", and he has a sunny personality.
    • Night Journey's name is a literal translation of her real first name, Israa.
    • Nevaeh King is named for a friend of performer Jay Miah's who committed suicide.
  • The Sacred Darkness: This is Night Journey's theme, being a soulful singer with a Dark Magical Girl appearance.
  • Sdrawkcab Name: "Nevaeh" is "Heaven" spelled backwards.
  • Sexier Alter Ego: While in theory, the contestants can make their alter egos look however they want, a lot of them opt for an alter ego who's more conventionally attractive than their real-life self. Special mention goes to hunky werewolf Wolfgang Champagne, who's actually a 60-year-old trucker, and sassy diva Safara, who's actually a shy, overweight young woman.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: Fern is a humanoid size fairy with pink skin, pink hair, and blue eyes with butterfly-like wings.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: Wolfgang Champagne claims that he is a werewolf because he was bitten by a Chihuahua about 500 years ago.
  • The Unmasking: When a contestant is eliminated, their alter ego performs one last time as the contestant is revealed to the judges.
